What is the difference between Solar Performance Analyst vs Solar Design Engineer?

AspectSolar Performance AnalystSolar Design Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, renewable energy, or related field; certifications like NABCEP are commonSimilar credentials; often holds engineering degrees and NABCEP certification
Work EnvironmentAnalyzes system performance data, often in office or remote settingsDesigns solar systems, working in office or on-site for system planning
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by solar companies, consultants, and utilities to optimize performanceUsed by solar installation firms and engineering consultancies for system design

The Solar Performance Analyst focuses on evaluating and optimizing existing solar systems' performance through data analysis, while the Solar Design Engineer is responsible for designing new solar systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often work within the same industry, but their core functions differ in analysis versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Performance Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Performance Analyst, you need a solid background in data analysis, solar energy systems, and a relevant degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with solar monitoring platforms, SCADA systems, and data analysis tools like Python, Excel, or PVsyst is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing solar plant performance, identifying issues, and optimizing energy output.

What are some common challenges faced by Solar Performance Analysts when interpreting solar energy data?

Solar Performance Analysts often encounter challenges such as dealing with inconsistent or incomplete data due to sensor malfunctions, weather variability, or communication errors. Accurately distinguishing between system underperformance caused by equipment issues versus external factors like shading or soiling can also be complex. To address these challenges, analysts utilize specialized software, collaborate closely with field technicians, and regularly review maintenance logs to ensure accurate performance assessments and actionable recommendations.

What are Solar Performance Analysts?

Solar Performance Analysts are professionals who monitor, analyze, and optimize the energy production of solar power systems. They use specialized software and data analytics to assess system performance, identify issues, and recommend improvements. Their work ensures that solar installations operate efficiently and deliver maximum energy output. Solar Performance Analysts often collaborate with engineers, maintenance teams, and project managers to maintain high standards of performance and reliability.

Job description

Performance Engineer: Solar & BESS

CIG Energy

Location: Windermere, FL (or as otherwise approved)

Reports To: SVP of Operations

Role Overview

CIG Energy is seeking a Performance Engineer: Solar & BESS to directly support the execution of its multi-gigawatt utility-scale solar and battery energy storage portfolio. This role is a core operational support function for the SVP of Operations, responsible for ensuring that energy models, system designs, EPC assumptions, and financial outputs are technically aligned, bankable, and executable in the field.

This position sits at the intersection of development, EPC execution, and capital markets, and carries real responsibility for protecting project performance, revenue assumptions, and long-term asset value. The Performance Engineer will serve as CIG Energy’s technical authority on energy production, degradation, and system optimization from greenfield development through operations.

Primary Responsibilities

· Act as the technical performance lead supporting Operations, responsible for protecting energy yield, availability, and long-term performance assumptions across CIG’s solar and BESS projects.

· Provide technical due diligence throughout the project lifecycle, from early-stage development through construction and operations.

· Own weather resource assessment, energy production modeling, and loss analysis for utility-scale solar PV and BESS projects.

· Serve as CIG Energy’s primary subject matter expert for solar production methodology and energy modeling best practices.

· Lead system configuration, assumptions, and alignment for PVsyst, ensuring layouts, losses, degradation, and operating assumptions are technically sound and execution-ready.

· Review EPC technical exhibits, performance guarantees, and design assumptions to ensure consistency with approved energy models and contractual obligations.

· Work directly with the SVP of Operations to:

· Identify performance risks early

· Validate EPC and supplier assumptions

· Support decision-making on layouts, equipment selection, and execution tradeoffs

Execution, Design & Optimization

· Support Project Execution teams in the development and coordination of optimized layouts, incorporating constructability, access, topography, interconnection, and construction sequencing constraints.

· Perform layout optimization, shading analysis, energy yield simulations, and detailed loss assessments.

· Conduct site assessments, review topographical and geotechnical data, and analyze meteorological datasets.

· Design and optimize BESS system layouts, including:

· Degradation modeling

· Augmentation strategies

· Long-term capacity and performance planning

· Collaborate closely with EPC partners, project managers, and internal stakeholders to ensure design quality, constructability, and execution alignment.

Financial & Commercial Alignment

· Partner with Capital Markets and Financial Modeling teams to ensure energy model inputs, production profiles, and degradation assumptions are fully aligned with financial models and investment materials.

· Support lender, tax equity, and investor technical diligence by providing clear, defensible performance assumptions and documentation.

· Assist in resolving technical questions related to performance guarantees, availability, and long-term asset value.

Standards, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

· Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC, and relevant industry guidance.

· Support performance monitoring, analytics, and reliability tracking across operating assets.

·Identify opportunities to improve modeling accuracy, design standards, and execution outcomes across the platform.

· Perform additional responsibilities as required to support operational execution and business needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Performance Engineer or in a closely related technical role within the renewable energy industry.Demonstrated hands-on experience with:

o PVsyst

o Solar and BESS energy modeling software

o Utility-scale project development and execution

o Solar PV system design and performance modeling

o Degradation analysis and long-term reliability tracking
