How much do hv switching jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for hv switching in the United States is $21.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $22.36 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an HV switching program?

An HV switching program involves procedures for safely disconnecting and reconnecting high-voltage electrical equipment, often performed by trained technicians to ensure system reliability and safety. It includes planning, executing switch operations, and verifying system status, typically following strict safety protocols and using specialized tools. This process is essential in maintenance, system upgrades, or fault isolation in electrical power systems.

What is the difference between Hv Switching vs Hv Lineman?

AspectHv SwitchingHv Lineman
CredentialsTypically requires specialized training and certifications in high voltage switchingRequires similar certifications, often including lineman and high voltage safety training
Work EnvironmentPrimarily performed in substations, switching yards, and outdoor high voltage areasWorks on power lines, poles, and outdoor electrical infrastructure
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by utility companies for switching operations and system maintenanceEmployed by utility companies, construction firms, and contractors for line installation and repair

Hv Switching and Hv Lineman roles share similar certifications and work environments, focusing on high voltage electrical systems. While Hv Switching specialists primarily perform switching operations within substations, Hv Linemen work on overhead and underground power lines. Both roles are essential in maintaining and ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical power systems.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

High-paying jobs that can reach $10,000 a month without a degree often include roles such as sales managers, real estate brokers, or skilled trades like electricians and plumbers with experience. These positions typically require strong skills, certifications, or licenses, and may involve commission-based income or entrepreneurship, especially in fields like HVAC switching or electrical work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HV Switching Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HV Switching Operator, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, high voltage safety procedures, and typically a relevant technical qualification or electrical license. Familiarity with SCADA systems, switching schedules, safety lockout/tagout protocols, and often completion of HV Switching certification courses are crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for managing risks and coordinating with teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of high voltage electrical infrastructure.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

High-paying jobs related to HV switching, such as specialized electrical or power system engineers, can sometimes pay $2000 or more per day, especially for contract or consulting roles requiring advanced skills and certifications. These positions often involve working on complex electrical infrastructure, grid management, or high-voltage systems, and may require extensive experience and safety training.

What are HV Switching jobs?

HV (High Voltage) Switching jobs involve operating, maintaining, and testing electrical equipment that controls the flow of high voltage electricity in power systems. Professionals in this field are responsible for safely isolating and reconnecting sections of the electrical grid for maintenance, repairs, or emergencies. They must follow strict safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and ensure the reliability of the power supply. HV Switching jobs are critical in industries such as utilities, mining, and large manufacturing plants where high voltage systems are used.

What are some common challenges faced by HV Switching technicians and how can they be managed?

HV Switching technicians often face challenges such as working under tight time constraints, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, and managing unexpected faults or outages. The nature of high-voltage systems requires constant vigilance and clear communication with team members to prevent accidents. Regular training, thorough pre-switching checks, and following standardized procedures are essential for minimizing risks and maintaining operational reliability. Building strong teamwork and a proactive approach to problem-solving can help technicians navigate these challenges effectively.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

High-paying jobs related to HV switching, such as senior electrical engineers, power systems managers, or utility company executives, can reach or exceed $500,000 annually with experience, certifications, and leadership roles. These positions often require specialized technical skills, industry knowledge, and sometimes overtime or on-call responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Design the HV analog front-end and multi-phase switching stage, including gate drive topology, protection, edge-rate control, operating envelope, and efficiency strategy.

  • Own schematic, layout, bring-up, and debug of PCBs through multiple board revisions from open-loop drive to production intent.

  • Design position readback and build the measurement chain and extraction strategy to recover usable signals in a high-voltage switching environment.

Job description

We're looking for a hands-on HV Power Electronics Engineer to own drive architecture and PCB design for a novel actuator platform targeting humanoid robotics. This is not a conventional motor-drive role: you will define the power electronics architecture for an actuator whose electrical behavior, sensing constraints, packaging limits, and efficiency targets do not map cleanly to an existing inverter template.
What You'll Do
  • Drive Architecture: Design the HV analog front-end and multi-phase switching stage; define gate drive topology, protection, edge-rate control, operating envelope, and efficiency strategy from first principles.
  • PCB Design: Own schematic, layout, bring-up, and debug through multiple board revisions - open-loop drive โ†’ integrated sense and MCU โ†’ production-intent.
  • Sense Channel: Design position readback that coexists with HV switching on the same substrate; build the measurement chain and extraction strategy needed to recover usable signals in a hostile electrical environment.
  • EMI Mitigation: Architect isolated rails, return paths, slew-rate control, and switching transitions; own pre-compliance EMI scanning and the design changes required to pass it.
  • Packaging & Interconnect: Define routing from driver board to actuator across a multi-layer assembly - evaluate flex/rigid-flex vs. wire harness against creepage, clearance, EMI coupling, mass/volume, and assembly constraints.

Qualifications
  • Education: BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience: 3+ years in analog/power electronics with HV experience (>100V), including end-to-end ownership of boards from schematic through bring-up and debug.
  • Core technical skills:
    • Gate drive design for HV switching; SPICE simulation; transient, fault, and protection design
    • Mixed-signal PCB layout - HV/LV isolation, current loops, return path control, noise partitioning, and compact packaging
    • EMI/EMC in mixed-signal environments: pre-compliance scanning, LISN use, isolation strategy, and board-level mitigation
    • Comfort designing for loads and sensing schemes that do not come with a standard reference architecture
  • What we value:
    • First-principles fluency - form a correct mental model of a new electromechanical system and turn it into a robust, efficient electronics architecture
    • Good engineering judgment under hard size, weight, thermal, and efficiency constraints
    • A builder mindset: ship hardware, find failures fast, iterate
