What is the difference between Solar Performance Analyst vs Solar Design Engineer?

AspectSolar Performance AnalystSolar Design Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, renewable energy, or related field; certifications like NABCEP are commonSimilar credentials; often holds engineering degrees and NABCEP certification
Work EnvironmentAnalyzes system performance data, often in office or remote settingsDesigns solar systems, working in office or on-site for system planning
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by solar companies, consultants, and utilities to optimize performanceUsed by solar installation firms and engineering consultancies for system design

The Solar Performance Analyst focuses on evaluating and optimizing existing solar systems' performance through data analysis, while the Solar Design Engineer is responsible for designing new solar systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often work within the same industry, but their core functions differ in analysis versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar performance analyst?

To thrive as a Solar Performance Analyst, you need a solid background in data analysis, solar energy systems, and a relevant degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with solar monitoring platforms, SCADA systems, and data analysis tools like Python, Excel, or PVsyst is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing solar plant performance, identifying issues, and optimizing energy output.

What are some common challenges faced by solar performance analysts when interpreting solar energy data?

Solar Performance Analysts often encounter challenges such as dealing with inconsistent or incomplete data due to sensor malfunctions, weather variability, or communication errors. Accurately distinguishing between system underperformance caused by equipment issues versus external factors like shading or soiling can also be complex. To address these challenges, analysts utilize specialized software, collaborate closely with field technicians, and regularly review maintenance logs to ensure accurate performance assessments and actionable recommendations.

What is a solar performance analyst?

Solar Performance Analysts are professionals who monitor, analyze, and optimize the energy production of solar power systems. They use specialized software and data analytics to assess system performance, identify issues, and recommend improvements. Their work ensures that solar installations operate efficiently and deliver maximum energy output. Job description

About Miller Bros Solar

At Miller Bros Solar, we're powering the future of renewable energy with innovative solar solutions that span commercial O&M, utility-scale projects, asset management, and specialized inverter services. Headquartered in Conshohocken, PA, our national footprint covers over 1,300 MW of PV plants across 29 states, backed by more than 30 years of electrical expertise.

Our Performance Engineering group optimizes asset performance through advanced data analysis tools, giving a traditional O&M service the ability to focus operational decisions on what poses the greatest financial return while minimizing future risk.

Why Work With Us

  • Hands-On Impact: Tackle real-world solar and energy storage challenges, gaining invaluable experience in a fast-growing industry.
  • Growth Opportunities: Benefit from OEM-certified training and clear paths for advancement in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
  • Competitive Perks: Excellent pay, comprehensive benefits, a family-oriented culture that values work-life balance, and a safety-first approach.

Position Overview

The Performance Engineer will be a core member of our data and analytics team, responsible for developing scalable programs, analytics pipelines, and automated reporting services that maximize the value of solar and battery storage assets. You will work with data housed in a central repository to extract, transform, and load clean datasets into reporting and analytics environments — then turn those insights into actionable metrics used by field technicians, asset managers, and customers to understand and improve asset health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced statistical analysis and data mining techniques to proactively detect problems through anomaly detection and pattern recognition.
  • Maintain and continuously improve internal solar performance models used for lost energy calculations, soiling analytics, forecasting, and early failure detection.
  • Perform root cause analysis on underperforming solar facilities, including gathering, filtering, and cleaning noisy or incomplete datasets.
  • Translate findings into alarms, automated alerts, and reporting tags within the data environment to support field and operations teams.
  • Design and implement a scalable data management and retention strategy aligned with asset life cycles.
  • Build and maintain scalable reporting services for internal stakeholders and external customers.

Experience

Required

  • 2+ years in applied computer science or engineering (research experience considered)
  • Proficiency in Python or R
  • Hands-on experience with Power BI
  • Foundational understanding of engineering principles
  • Experience in software development and code base maintenance within small team environments

Preferred

  • 2+ years of experience in machine learning and data mining
  • Familiarity with OSIsoft PI systems
  • SQL proficiency

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Physics
  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics is a strong plus

Core Competencies

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams while maintaining quality and schedule
  • Self-directed problem solver who can work both independently and collaboratively
  • Clear and accurate communicator — in writing, documentation, and verbally
  • Creative thinker capable of developing novel solutions for problems without a well-defined path forward
