Job description

Job Summary 

The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Standard Solar’s IT infrastructure, business systems, cloud platforms, and operational technology support environment. This role provides technical ownership across user-facing and back-end systems, including hybrid identity, Microsoft cloud services, virtualization, networking, security controls, system integrations, documentation, and operational support. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong technical, analytical, project management, and communication skills who can partner effectively with internal stakeholders, vendors, contractors, and Brookfield Renewable Partners to deliver secure, scalable, and cost-effective technology solutions. 

This position is based on-site in the Rockville, MD office. Evening, weekend, or on-call work is not regularly planned, but may be required on occasion; travel to project sites in the United States is possible. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the definition, development, implementation, configuration, and maintenance of new and existing user-facing, back-end, cloud, network, and business technology systems. 

  • Provide operational system ownership, technical leadership, hands-on engineering, and technical program management for assigned platforms and services. 

  • Oversee and support servers, virtualization platforms, networking infrastructure, Microsoft cloud systems, SaaS platforms, integrations, and related security controls. 

  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot complex issues, perform updates and patches, support backup and recovery practices, and ensure high availability, reliability, integrity, and security of systems and data. 

  • Partner with leadership, architecture teams, project teams, business stakeholders, vendors, contractors, and end users to identify requirements, perform feasibility analysis, and deliver practical solutions aligned with business outcomes. 

  • Design, support, and maintain system integrations with other platforms, including API-based integrations where applicable, specific to the needs of Standard Solar. 

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including SOPs, system specifications, logical and physical architecture diagrams, platform configurations, change records, implementation plans, processes, and procedures. 

  • Conduct regular audits, assessments, and reviews of systems and networks to identify risks, vulnerabilities, issues, and opportunities for optimization. 

  • Ensure risks and issues are identified, documented, escalated, and actioned appropriately in accordance with ISO processes, company quality expectations, and applicable compliance frameworks. 

  • Provide advanced technical support for hardware, software, cloud, identity, network, security, and infrastructure issues, escalating when necessary. 

  • Stay current with evolving IT systems, cybersecurity, cloud, networking, and infrastructure technologies; recommend improvements, innovations, and cost-effective solutions. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Hybrid and cloud identity, with Microsoft Active Directory & Entra ID, including third-party SSO integrations using SAML and/or OIDC 

  • MFA (Cisco Duo experience preferred) and Conditional access policy design and implementation 

  • Microsoft cloud systems, including Microsoft 365, Entra, Azure, and related administration, configuration, and support practices. 

  • Core networking concepts, including switching, routing, firewall administration, network protocols, and cybersecurity best practices. 

  • Virtualization platforms such as VMware, Proxmox, or similar technologies. 

  • System integration design and support, including API integrations where applicable. 

  • Technical documentation, including SOPs, architecture diagrams, platform configurations, support procedures, implementation plans, and change records. 

  • Strong analytical thinking, logical reasoning, troubleshooting ability, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to assess and solve complex technical problems. 

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, systems, issues, and projects under time pressure while remaining flexible and adaptable to changing requirements. 

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to relay technical information, train users, present recommendations, and collaborate across in-office and remote teams. 

  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with helpdesk, security, network, operations, leadership, vendor, and business stakeholder teams. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, IT systems engineering, or a related field; or 5+ years of equivalent experience in lieu of a degree. 

  • At least 3 years of experience in hybrid IT infrastructure design, systems engineering, Azure cloud infrastructure, SaaS platform administration, or related IT systems work. 

  • At least 3 years of experience with Microsoft cloud systems 

  • Experience configuring and administering on-premises virtualization environments such as VMware or Proxmox 

  • Experience designing, documenting, and improving IT administration, engineering, and support processes and procedures. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while managing multiple priorities and projects simultaneously. 

Desired Experience: 

  • Experience with networking infrastructure design, engineering, and operations, including switching, routing, and firewall administration; Cisco Meraki experience preferred. 

  • Experience with mobile device management design, implementation, and operations, including Microsoft Intune. 

  • Experience with system vulnerability assessment platforms and information security controls aligned with ISO 27001, NIST CSF, SOX ITGC, or similar frameworks. 

  • Experience developing PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or similar automation scripts to automate tasks, create reports, and troubleshoot issues. 

  • Experience supporting Operational Technology or outdoor Data Acquisition System environments, especially in support of solar energy production sites. 

  • Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, or Red Hat Certified System Administrator are preferred. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
Conducts work primarily in a professional office setting. Physical working conditions may involve the following: 

  • Lifting items up to 40 pounds of computing equipment. 

  • Extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, reaching, and/or bending. 

  • Extended periods of reading fine print on a computer or in paper-based format. 

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  
Routine aspects of this position may require the following non-physical demands: 

  • Analytical and logical reasoning. 

  • Time management and organizational skills. Self-driven and able to work independently without guidance.  

  • Communication skills across in-office and remote coworking teams  

  • Professional decorum in a diverse, inclusive working environment. 

POTENTIAL HAZARDS: 
Routine aspects of this position may place the incumbent in situations where they may be susceptible to potential hazards from the following: 

  • Trips, slips and/or falls while on customer property. 

  • Chemical abrasives are used in office and kitchen cleaning. 

  • Lifting items up to 40 pounds in weight. 

  • Other hazardous conditions on solar project site premises, not otherwise defined here.
