Job description

Project Engineer II (Pre-construction) is responsible for managing engineering budgets, schedules and coordinating engineering deliverables to internal & external stakeholders to design, develop & optimize utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate design activities with both external parties and internal personnel to ensure accuracy and timeliness of information.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with the engineering team assigned to a project.
  • Support regular meetings with project teams and clients to ensure technical clarifications are provided and to communicate status of engineering activities.
  • Interface with various vendors to meet technical requirements of the project. Track engineering subcontractor invoices and internal labor hours throughout project.
  • Develop and maintain engineering schedules that cover all design disciplines.
  • Develop and maintain engineering budgets that cover all design disciplines and that include both internal labor and subcontracted costs.
  • Assist with the development of engineering scopes of work for use in administering external design Request for Proposals (RFPs) and evaluation of proposals and work products.
  • Manage file sharing of technical documentation for internal departments and subcontractors,
  • Assist with RFIs and ensure prompt response to all RFIs related to project design.
  • Source, organize, and evaluate site diligence documents. Develop site intake and evaluation checklists to facilitate evaluation of site feasibility, design, risks, and costs. Internally communicate risks clearly.
  • Coordinate with Business Development and Procurement teams regarding evaluation and selection of equipment (modules, racking, inverters, batteries) to optimize for energy and cost
  • Understand the terms of the proposed relevant contracts and agreements as they impact engineering activities and deliverables.
  • Produce or coordinate the production of cost-effective project plans, with an emphasis on constructability and long-term asset management
  • Utilize existing company processes and resources, as well as implement improvements to enhance the capabilities of the project teams.
  • Coordinate the transition of projects to pre-construction for execution.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering strongly preferred. Other STEM-related degrees may be considered. Advanced degrees preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years relevant work experience
  • Experience with the design of utility scale PV solar and BESS projects
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Strong time management, written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment, with changing priorities and limited direction
  • Experience with AutoCAD, PVFarm (or equal), and standard GIS tools preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, independently and meet deadlines across multiple internal and external stakeholders, with minimal supervision

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

Role is in Durham, NC HQ. Work is performed primarily in the office. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, and twist. May be exposed to weather elements when in the field. Limited out of town travel may be required, estimated at less than 10%.
