How much do soil vapor extraction jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for soil vapor extraction in the United States is $43,669.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $37,500.00 and $38,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) Technician, you need a solid understanding of environmental science, remediation techniques, and safety regulations, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications in hazardous materials handling. Familiarity with SVE system components, air monitoring instruments, and data logging software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, effective operation of SVE systems and compliance with environmental standards during site remediation projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Soil Vapor Extraction projects?

Professionals in Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) projects often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing subsurface heterogeneity, which can affect vapor flow and contaminant removal efficiency. Adjusting system design to accommodate different soil types, moisture content, and fluctuating contaminant concentrations is common. Additionally, coordinating with environmental engineers, regulatory agencies, and site owners to ensure compliance and optimize remediation strategies is essential. Team members also need to monitor system performance regularly and troubleshoot issues like equipment malfunctions or unexpected vapor migration.

What is soil vapor extraction?

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is an environmental remediation technology used to remove volatile contaminants from soil. This process involves applying a vacuum to the soil to draw out contaminated vapors, which are then treated above ground before being released or disposed of. SVE is commonly used to clean up sites polluted by petroleum products, solvents, or other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The technology is effective for treating unsaturated soils and is often part of a larger remediation strategy.

What is the difference between Soil Vapor Extraction vs Soil Remediation Technician?

AspectSoil Vapor ExtractionSoil Remediation Technician
CredentialsEnvironmental certifications, technical trainingEnvironmental or technical certifications, safety training
Work EnvironmentField sites, contaminated soil areasField sites, remediation sites
Industry UsageEnvironmental cleanup, hazardous waste managementSoil remediation, environmental services

Soil Vapor Extraction specialists focus on removing volatile contaminants from soil and groundwater using specialized equipment, while Soil Remediation Technicians perform broader tasks in cleaning and restoring contaminated sites. Both roles require environmental certifications and work in similar field environments, often within the same industry sectors. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in environmental remediation.
