What is soil regeneration?

Soil regeneration refers to the process of restoring and improving the health, fertility, and biological activity of soil that has been degraded by factors such as erosion, over-farming, or chemical use. It involves practices like crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, composting, and adding organic matter to rebuild soil structure and increase nutrient content. The goal is to create sustainable, resilient soils that support healthy plant growth and contribute to environmental health. Soil regeneration is key to sustainable agriculture and combating climate change by enhancing soil carbon sequestration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a soil regeneration specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Soil Regeneration Specialist, you need expertise in soil science, agronomy, and sustainable land management, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with soil testing equipment, GIS mapping tools, and data analysis software is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset help foster partnerships with farmers, landowners, and environmental organizations. These skills are crucial for developing effective soil restoration strategies that improve ecosystem health and agricultural productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in soil regeneration, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in soil regeneration often encounter challenges such as degraded land with low organic matter, compacted soils, and resistance from stakeholders unfamiliar with regenerative practices. Addressing these issues requires ongoing education, collaboration with local farmers or landowners, and the implementation of proven techniques like cover cropping, compost application, and reduced tillage. Teamwork with agronomists, ecologists, and community organizations is essential for designing effective strategies and monitoring progress. Open communication and continuous learning help overcome obstacles and ensure long-term project success.

What is the difference between Soil Regeneration vs Soil Scientist?

AspectSoil RegenerationSoil Scientist
Required CredentialsEnvironmental or agricultural certifications, training in soil health practicesDegree in soil science, environmental science, or related field; often with advanced certifications
Work EnvironmentFieldwork, farms, conservation sites, ecological projectsLaboratories, research institutions, field sites, academia
Employer & IndustryEnvironmental organizations, farms, conservation agenciesResearch institutions, government agencies, universities

While both roles focus on soil health, Soil Regeneration emphasizes practical restoration techniques in the field, whereas Soil Scientists conduct research and analysis to understand soil properties. Both careers are vital for sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation, but they differ in focus, credentials, and work settings.

Job description

The Opportunity

Grassroots Carbon is the leading grasslands restoration and soil carbon company in the United States. We have a powerful story to tell — one rooted in science, measurable impact, and a deep partnership with American ranchers. Our work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and multiple carbon/ESG publications, and we are poised to become the defining voice in nature-based carbon removal.

We are seeking a driven and creative Manager or Director, Brand Reach & Communications to own our narrative and dramatically expand our reach. This is not a campaign-based role or an agency handoff. We need someone who will build and execute a sustained communications strategy that elevates Grassroots Carbon’s profile with regulators, carbon registries, corporate carbon buyers, and future investors by helping promote our story to the broader public through media, podcasts, Substacks, and social channels.

What You’ll OwnStrategy & Narrative
  • Build and own a multi-channel communications strategy with a clear roadmap across earned media, owned content, and social
  • Steward the Grassroots Carbon narrative — our position as the leader in delivering high quality, nature-based, carbon removal solutions, soil science, and ranching partnerships.
  • Create a consistent communications calendar — not episodic campaigns
Earned Media
  • Pitch and place stories in national outlets (WSJ, Bloomberg, NYT, FT) and industry publications covering climate, agriculture, and carbon markets
  • Build direct relationships with journalists, editors, and podcast hosts — no agency intermediary
  • Secure CEO features, interviews, and profiles with meaningful audience reach
Thought Leadership & Content
  • Write and place CEO bylines, op-eds, and essays for carbon buyers, investor, and policy audiences
  • Pursue podcast appearances and Substack relationships in climate, regenerative ag, and sustainability
  • Translate complex science into compelling narratives for non-technical audiences
Social & Digital
  • Own and grow LinkedIn with consistent, high-quality content
  • Identify and activate influencer relationships in agriculture, climate, and sustainability
Cross-Functional
  • Surface stories from science, sales, and rancher teams to fuel the communications pipeline
  • Support investor relations and regulatory engagement with polished, consistent messaging

Requirements

What We’re Looking For
  • 5–8 years in communications, PR, journalism, or content strategy with a track record of national earned media placements
  • Strong writer — op-eds, pitches, scripts, and social copy with equal facility
  • Demonstrated ability to build sustained media momentum, not just one-time launches
  • Background in journalism, climate/sustainability, or mission-driven startups preferred
  • Familiarity with corporate sustainability, policy, or investment audiences is a plus
  • Self-directed and entrepreneurial — sets strategy, owns execution, operates without a large team
  • Genuinely aligned with Grassroots Carbon’s mission in regenerative agriculture and soil carbon
  • Willing to travel for media appearances, industry events, and ranch visits
What We’ll Ask You to Show Us
  • A portfolio of placed stories and authored content you drove from pitch to publication
  • A communications strategy you built from scratch — approach, sequencing, and measured outcomes
  • Journalist or podcast relationships you cultivated independently
  • Examples of making technical or scientific content compelling for a general audience

Benefits

  • Health insurance plan with $0 deductible and $0 co-pay.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Flexible spending account option.
  • Open Paid Time Off Policy plus 9 paid holidays per year.
  • 401(k) savings plan.
  • Company-paid Life and AD&D coverage.
  • Educational materials and expenses to support continuing education opportunities.
