Their role involves risk management, stakeholder communication, and resolving any issues that could impact project success. Software Program Managers act as a bridge between technical teams and business leaders to ensure alignment throughout the software development lifecycle.

By acting as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, Program Managers help ensure that quality standards are maintained while deadlines are achieved. Effective communication and proactive issue resolution are key aspects of their collaboration with these teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Program Manager, you need expertise in project management, software development life cycles, and a relevant degree, often complemented by experience in leading technical teams. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Microsoft Project, and Agile or Scrum certifications is typically required for planning and tracking progress. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for aligning teams and managing expectations. These competencies are vital to deliver projects on time, within scope, and to ensure effective collaboration among cross-functional teams.

Job description

Requisition Id 16528

Overview:

The Engineering Management Division (EMD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Design and Program engineer to support implementation of design and configuration management in the Research & Development (R&D) environment. This individual will also be responsible for management, implementation, and oversight of the site-wide glovebox lifecycle safety and integrity program.

This position supports the management and implementation of ORNL’s site-wide glovebox lifecycle safety and integrity program and assists R&D in safely defining their systems with engineering integrity and structured configuration management.

Gloveboxes are typically used as an engineering control to protect workers from hazards and to control the atmosphere for work with air and moisture sensitive materials. R&D systems often incorporate engineered controls in their design to facilitate safe operation. This position will support R&D staff, operations personnel, facility management organizations, and the Engineering Management System Owner (MSO) in the successful and compliant implementation of the glovebox program. This position will also support the deployment of hazard based subject areas that require a design component to facilitate system evaluation, operation and training. Additional duties may include assisting in establishing engineering safety and code-based requirements for new construction.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This position will support the implementation and development of the glovebox program.
  • This position will be responsible for ensuring R&D and operations staff are provided with appropriate expertise to support design, commissioning, operations and maintenance of gloveboxes.
  • This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining the glovebox subject area to incorporate user feedback, industry experience and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • This position will provide support to R&D staff in development of system designs. These system designs will facilitate system evaluation, operator training, and configuration management.
  • This position will support operations and R&D staff in establishing baseline engineering code and standards requirements for design.
  • This position will use the design process to effectively implement chemical, pressure, material handling, compressed gas and system safety programs.
  • Working with the Engineering MSO, Point of Contact (POC) and Quality Representative, this position will assist in the development and implementation of an assurance and assessment strategy for the glovebox program and assist with other assessments as requested.
  • Specific activities and tasks for this position include:
    • Collaborate with R&D and operations staff to understand the work being planned and the associated glovebox and design needs.
    • Collaborate with Safety and Health professionals who prescribe the performance criteria of these systems.
    • Prepare specifications and perform designs.
    • Coordinate activities with facilities management and support staff in providing and maintaining systems.
    • As requested, support the SMEs / program managers for related engineering programs: Engineering Design, Configuration Management, Fire Protection, Pressure System Safety, System Safety, and Welding/Burning/Hotwork.
    • Abide by the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research Principles.
    • Support the local quality representative in assessing and maintaining applicable subject area standards.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in an engineering related field (mechanical preferred), from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program and have 5+ years’ relevant experience or MS in Engineering with 4+ years’ relevant experience.
  • The successful candidate will have experience in a research environment including field/facility experience with research systems and gloveboxes in the areas of evaluation, modification, design, troubleshooting, calculations, and commissioning.
  • The successful candidate will have good oral communication and technical writing skills and will be proficient with common computer software used in the office environment. Have a strong sense of customer service and able to have positive interactions and collaborations with fellow ORNL staff from other engineering disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
