What is a software engineering team lead?

A Software Engineering Team Lead is a senior-level professional responsible for guiding and managing a team of software engineers. They oversee the planning, development, and delivery of software projects, ensuring that the team meets technical standards and project deadlines. In addition to their technical expertise, they provide mentorship, facilitate communication, and help resolve any obstacles that may arise during the development process. Their role often bridges the gap between engineering teams and management, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineering team lead?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Team Lead, you need a solid background in software development, experience with project management, and a track record of leading technical teams, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps is typically required. Strong communication, mentorship, and conflict resolution skills help foster team collaboration and professional growth. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality software solutions while motivating and guiding a productive, cohesive team.

What are some common challenges faced by a software engineering team lead, and how can they be addressed?

As a Software Engineering Team Lead, one of the most common challenges is balancing hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities, such as mentoring team members and managing project timelines. Effective delegation and clear communication are key to ensuring both technical and managerial duties are met. Additionally, fostering collaboration between team members and other departments—like product management or QA—can help prevent bottlenecks and miscommunication. Regular one-on-ones and sprint retrospectives are also valuable for addressing issues early and supporting team growth.

Job description

Quanta Power Solutions brings together the industry-leading capabilities and resources of Quanta's operating companies to deliver complete EPC solutions. Our integrated approach spans power generation, battery energy storage, renewables, transmission, substation, and underground infrastructure — from concept to commissioning, we execute complex power infrastructure projects with the speed, certainty, and operational excellence our customers depend on.

At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution — and we're building a team that shares that commitment.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with leadership, planning, and cross-functional coordination skills to support critical energy infrastructure operations.

  • Troubleshoot equipment and system failures while leading root-cause analysis and corrective action efforts
  • Drive reliability, availability, and efficiency improvements across plant systems and operational processes
  • Support outage planning, execution, and post-outage analysis activities

Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Coordinate closely with project controls, maintenance, operations, and engineering teams
  • Manage engineering scopes, schedules, budgets, vendor coordination, and project execution activities
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, regulatory, and safety requirements including standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency, North American Electric Reliability Corporation, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • Maintain engineering procedures, technical standards, and operational documentation
  • Participate in audits, inspections, safety reviews, and incident investigations

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with operations, maintenance, procurement, and leadership teams to support plant objectives
  • Support long-term asset strategy, lifecycle planning, budgeting, and reliability initiatives
  • Prepare technical reports, operational metrics, and performance updates for management teams

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering field
  • 7–12+ years of experience in power generation, utilities, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Demonstrated expertise in plant systems, maintenance strategies, and reliability engineering practices
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of generation equipment such as turbines, boilers, generators, balance-of-plant systems, or renewable energy assets
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms, project management tools, and engineering software applications
  • Understanding of regulatory, environmental, and safety requirements within power generation operations
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within fast-paced operational environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading engineers, technical specialists, or plant engineering teams
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
