Job description

Overview
Lutron is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to serve as a people leader and organizational anchor for our growing Boston software team. This role is ideal for a leader who thrives on coaching engineers, developing future leaders, strengthening culture, and aligning teams to a shared technical vision, rather than personally driving day-to-day project execution.
As we scale our Boston presence, this role will play a critical part in ensuring the long-term health, effectiveness, and growth of the local software organization while partnering closely with senior engineering leadership across the company.
In this role, you will lead and support teams of talented software engineers working across embedded, mobile, cloud, and web technologies. Rather than acting as a primary project lead, you will focus on mentorship, organizational alignment, capability building, and delivery excellence - ensuring teams are set up for sustained success.
You will help teams deliver high-quality, customer-facing software by reinforcing strong engineering practices, fostering collaboration across functions, and championing continuous improvement in how we build and ship connected systems. You will also serve as the primary advocate and leader for software engineering in the Boston office, helping shape its evolution as Lutron continues to grow.
Responsibilities
  • Fuel your passion for people development, coaching, and organizational effectiveness as a people manager, coach, and direct supervisor for software engineers and engineering supervisors, providing regular feedback, career development guidance, and support
  • Leverage your strong understanding of the software development lifecycle and agile methodologies to provide teams with oversight and advice including strategic vision, phasing, delivery, stakeholder engagement and overall technical approach
  • Foster a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality, collaboration, and learning
  • Partner with senior engineering and product leadership to support organizational growth in Boston

Qualifications
What we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science or Cybersecurity
  • Minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA for all degrees earned
  • 10+ years of industry experience with 5+ years in a technical leadership role
  • Demonstrated success building, leading, and retaining high-performing engineering teams

The ideal candidate would have:
  • Familiarity in one or more of the following areas:

  • Embedded systems: Embedded Linux using C++ or Go
  • Mobile applications: Kotlin (Android) or Swift (iOS)
  • Desktop applications: C# and WPF
  • Cloud services: AWS (IoT, messaging, distributed service architectures)
  • Web applications: React

  • Experience with SAFe
  • Previous experience working with hardware devices and teams
  • Experience developing software for connected devices, IoT platforms, or smart home systems
  • Comfortable working and leading cross-functionally across engineering disciplines

Starting pay: $175,000 to $210,000 per year; Lutron's employee benefits include 401k match, health, dental, and life insurance, paid vacation (amount based on tenure with the company), flexible spending accounts, and tuition reimbursement programs.
