Another aspect of this career involves understanding the market and competitor’s products so that your software can compete and meet market demands.

What does a software engineering manager do?

A Software Engineering Manager oversees a team of software engineers, guiding the development of software projects from planning to implementation. They are responsible for managing the team's workflow, ensuring high-quality code, and meeting project deadlines. In addition to technical leadership, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and performance reviews. Their role bridges the gap between technical execution and business objectives, ensuring that software solutions align with strategic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership, and project management, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for successfully guiding technical teams, delivering projects efficiently, and fostering a collaborative and innovative engineering culture.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineering managers when leading diverse development teams?

Software Engineering Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing technical leadership with people management, aligning team members with different backgrounds and skill sets, and ensuring effective communication across remote or cross-functional teams. Job description

Java is a strategic platform for enterprises and public-sector organizations. Oracle Java SE Subscription customers rely on Oracle for trusted technology, security updates, management capabilities, support, and modernization guidance. The Java Success Consulting team helps customers maximize the value of their Oracle Java investment through trusted technical advisory services, interactive workshops, and ongoing customer engagement.

These complimentary engagements help customers strengthen the security, performance, management, and modernization of their Java environments while building trusted technical relationships with Oracle. This is a Principal-level individual contributor role supporting the North America Sales region.

The consultant may work remotely from the United States or Canada and partners across Customer Success, Solution Consulting, Sales, Product Management, Support, and Engineering to help customers realize sustained value from Java.

Your Opportunity
  • You will be the technical face of Java and a trusted advisor to our customers.
  • You will discover customer priorities, goals, and aspirations; assess opportunities for improvement; and deliver tailored advisory sessions, workshops, and related engagements for developers, architects, operations teams, managers, and executives.
  • You will assess each customer’s Java estate, tailor the technical depth to the audience, explain complex application and JVM topics clearly, and translate discussion into actionable next steps.
  • This is a customer-success role rather than a primarily billable implementation role; success is measured by the technical value you create through trusted advice, engagement, adoption, measurable outcomes, and customer satisfaction.
Our Ideal profile
  • A deeply technical Java engineer who combines strong software engineering fundamentals with the ability to rapidly understand unfamiliar customer environments and provide practical, evidence-based guidance.
  • A trusted technical advisor who communicates effectively with audiences ranging from software engineers to executive and business stakeholders, adapting technical depth to the needs of each audience.
  • A collaborative problem solver who applies sound engineering judgment, independently investigates unfamiliar technical challenges, and delivers practical, experience-based recommendations in complex customer environments.
  • A proactive contributor who creates opportunities rather than waiting for direction, continuously learns new technologies, shares knowledge freely, and enables both customers and colleagues to succeed
