Job description

Software Engineering Manager, Android

Current is a leading consumer fintech platform transforming financial access for everyday Americans with over 6 million members. We provide access to financial solutions that seamlessly work together to solve the needs of our members and enable all Americans to build better financial futures. Based in NYC, our results-driven environment drives us to build better products, grow faster and empower everyone on our team to have an impact on our business and mission to improve financial outcomes.

Our mobile engineers are responsible for building the full suite of user experiences for our members, leveraging our proprietary backend banking core. The Android app is written in Kotlin, built 100% natively with no cross-platform frameworks, and utilizes gRPC to interface with our backend. Being the primary interface for our members to manage their finances (there isn't a web app), the mobile experience needs to be highly performant and intuitive to use. This forces our engineers to think through foundational layers of application infrastructure, reusable UI components, and the collection of data that drive these decisions.

We are looking for an Android Engineering Manager to join our team in New York. This role has a salary range of $210,000 - $280,000. You will work to lead the delivery of key business initiatives, improve existing architecture and services, and design large-scale data-intensive applications. You will be hands-on (30% of the time), leading your team by example and defining the standards of engineering excellence. The ideal candidate would have at least 2 years of management experience and a background in native Android development.

Join us for an opportunity to work in a fast-moving environment where your work is highly visible and has a direct impact on our members' financial outcomes!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical and people leadership to a team of Android engineers. Own team planning, execution, and delivery of high-quality features and platform improvements.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, deliver timely and constructive feedback, support career growth, and foster a team culture of inclusion, psychological safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Define team priorities, technical roadmaps, and long-term platform investments aligned to business goals. Establish clear technical direction in collaboration with senior engineers and cross-functional partners.
  • Define and maintain standards for code quality, testing, performance, and security. Implement processes to enable greater development velocity without sacrificing technical quality.
  • Work closely with product managers, designers, QA, and backend teams to scope features, assess feasibility, align on priorities, and ensure the successful delivery of initiatives.
  • Deeply understand the product and user experience to make informed technical and architectural decisions that tie back to customer and business goals.
  • Contribute to the Android codebase, review pull requests, troubleshoot complex bugs, and help resolve architectural or project bottlenecks. Lead by example and serve as a mentor and unblocker for the team.

ABOUT YOU:

  • 5+ years of experience building native Android applications.
  • 2+ years in an engineering management role, growing and developing high-performing mobile teams.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering complex mobile products with robust architecture and maintainable codebases.
  • Excellent time management: able to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities efficiently.
  • Excellent communication skills: effective at collaborating with cross-functional partners and stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Strong organizational skills: experienced in team capacity planning, backlog management, and translating high-level goals into executable roadmaps.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and accountable team culture.
  • A passion for building user-centric products and excitement in fintech.

NICE TO HAVES:

  • Experience supporting teams through the adoption of Compose and the shift toward modularized, scalable codebases.
  • Experience building or integrating developer tools or automation that boost team velocity and efficiency.
  • Familiarity with best practices in implementing CI/CD pipelines and overseeing the mobile app deployment lifecycle.
  • Have fintech and/or startup experience.

BENEFITS:

  • Competitive salary
  • Meaningful equity in the form of stock options
  • 401(k) plan
  • Discretionary performance bonus program
  • Biannual performance reviews
  • Medical, Dental and Vision premiums covered at 100% for you and your dependents
  • Flexible time off and paid holidays
  • Generous parental leave policy
  • Commuter benefits
  • Fitness benefits
  • Healthcare and Dependent care FSA benefit
  • Employee Assistance Programs focused on mental health
  • Healthcare advocacy program for all employees
  • Access to mental health apps
  • Team building activities
  • Our modern NYC based office with open floor plan, stocked kitchen, and catered lunches
