Software Engineering Manager information

What does a software engineering manager do?

A software engineering manager oversees a team of people who are working on the development of new computer software or the enhancement of existing computer programs. Because this is a management job, your duties may include coordinating and planning with other departments within the company and with company executives. In addition to management skills, you need a firm understanding of the technical aspects of software engineering. Another aspect of this career involves understanding the market and competitor’s products so that your software can compete and meet market demands.

What does a software engineering manager do?

A Software Engineering Manager oversees a team of software engineers, guiding the development of software projects from planning to implementation. They are responsible for managing the team's workflow, ensuring high-quality code, and meeting project deadlines. In addition to technical leadership, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and performance reviews. Their role bridges the gap between technical execution and business objectives, ensuring that software solutions align with strategic goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership, and project management, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools, agile methodologies, version control systems, and, in some cases, certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are valuable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for successfully guiding technical teams, delivering projects efficiently, and fostering a collaborative and innovative engineering culture.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineering managers when leading diverse development teams?

Software Engineering Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing technical leadership with people management, aligning team members with different backgrounds and skill sets, and ensuring effective communication across remote or cross-functional teams. Navigating these challenges involves fostering an inclusive environment, setting clear expectations, and adapting management styles to individual team members’ needs. Successful managers also prioritize regular check-ins and feedback to keep projects on track and support professional growth within the team.

Job description

Engineering at Brex

Engineering at Brex is about building systems that scale with speed and intention. Our teams span Software, Data, Security, and IT, and operate with high autonomy and deep collaboration. We tackle hard technical problems, own our outcomes, and push for excellence at every level - from architecture to deployment. It's an environment where engineering is a craft, and builders become leaders.

What you'll do

We're building a new team within Brex's Travel group to own a defined part of our next-generation travel experience, and we're looking for the Engineering Manager to build and lead it. This is a rare from-scratch opportunity: a large strategic investment, a clean slate on team shape and roadmap, and high autonomy to define how the team works.

Part of your job is deciding what the job is. The broader Travel group covers a lot of ground, and one of your first and most important tasks is to help shape this team's mandate within that bigger picture - what it owns, where its boundaries sit, and where it should focus to have the most impact. You'll start with a small existing group and grow it through hiring into the team that carries this part of travel forward.

You'll set the technical and product direction for the team, ship a competitive customer-facing product, and build the culture from day one. Because the domain is new and the roadmap is yours to shape, product judgment matters as much as technical judgment here - you'll be making real calls about what to build and why, not just executing a handed-down plan.

Where you'll work

This role will be based in our Vancouver, Canada office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!

Responsibilities
  • Build and lead a new full-stack team owning a defined part of Brex's next-generation travel experience, growing it through hiring and onboarding new engineers.
  • Help define and continually sharpen the team's mandate within the broader Travel group - what it owns, where its boundaries sit, and where it should focus.
  • Set the team's technical and product direction, making thoughtful tradeoffs about what to build, in what order, and why.
  • Ship a high-quality, reliable, competitive travel product, balancing customer-facing feature velocity with a durable technical foundation.
  • Foster a people-centered culture on a brand-new team - one built on enablement, trust, and context-sharing.
  • Partner cross-functionally across Travel, Expenses, and Product to align on scope and delivery.
  • Provide strong coaching, mentorship, and career development for engineers at all levels.
  • Bring an AI-forward mindset to how the team builds and operates.
Requirements
  • Track record of engineering leadership building and scaling customer-facing products, including hiring and growing teams.
  • Strong product sense - the ability to make and defend product and UX tradeoffs, not just technical ones.
  • A staff-engineer-level technical bar; able to operate at all levels and earn the technical respect of a strong engineering team.
  • Strong customer empathy and advocacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrated coaching and mentorship of engineers across levels.
Bonus points
  • Travel domain experience (e.g., online booking / travel management platforms such as Navan or similar).
  • Experience standing up a new team or product area from scratch.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is $240,000 CAD - $300,000 CAD. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
