Director of Project Controls

Ivanhoe Electric

Casa Grande, AZ • On-site

Full-time

Job description

About Ivanhoe Electric Inc.

We are a United States-domiciled minerals exploration company with a focus on developing mines from mineral deposits principally located in the United States. We seek to support American supply chain independence by finding and delivering copper and other critical metals vital to advanced manufacturing, infrastructure development, technology, and national security. We use our powerful Typhoon™ geophysical surveying system, together with advanced data analytics provided by our 94.3% owned subsidiary, Computational Geosciences Inc. (“CGI”), to accelerate and de-risk the mineral exploration process as we seek to discover new deposits of critical metals that may otherwise be undetectable by traditional exploration technologies. We believe the United States is significantly underexplored and has the potential to yield major new discoveries of critical metals. Our mineral exploration efforts focus on copper and other metals, including nickel, cobalt, platinum-group elements, gold, and silver. Through the advancement of our portfolio of critical metals exploration projects, headlined by the Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, we intend to contribute to domestic supply by developing resources that support industrial and strategic sectors. We also operate a 50/50 joint venture with Saudi Arabian Mining Company ("Maaden") to explore for minerals on ~48,500 km2 of underexplored Arabian Shield in Saudi Arabia. Finally, in 2024, we established an exploration alliance with BHP Mineral Resources Inc. (“BHP”), a subsidiary of BHP Group Limited, to search for critical minerals in the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Summary of Primary Functions

The Director of Project Controls is accountable for implementing and leading the integrated project controls system for the Santa Cruz Copper Project, ensuring the project is fully prepared for healthy, safe, predictable, and measurable construction execution.

This role owns the integrity of cost, schedule, risk, change, and progress measurement across early works and underground development scopes. The Director provides control intelligence to the General Manager - Construction and ensures the project is structurally ready for construction scale-up and execution.

The Director holds functional authority over project performance measurement standards and baseline integrity across engineering and construction. At the same time, field execution, contractor management, and productivity remain the responsibility of the construction leadership team.

To support the hybrid integrated project team (IPT) delivery model:

  • Project Controls owns measurement methodology, baseline governance, forecasting, and performance assurance.
  • Construction leadership owns means, methods, and field execution.
  • Director of Contractor Services owns contractor onboarding and performance management.
  • Superintendent owns day-to-day field delivery and quantity validation.

The Director operates as the owner’s independent performance authority, not as the field execution lead.

Health & Safety

  • Ivanhoe Electric Inc. is committed to a strong Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Program that protects the persons, property, and environment within our care from incidents. We believe that all incidents are preventable. Management, contractors, and all employees are collectively responsible for ensuring compliance with local government, occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations. Responsible for upholding and demonstrating the importance of the use and maintenance of Ivanhoe Electric’s cloud-based, digitized, and centralized health and safety systems.
  • Working in a healthy and safe manner at all times and setting an example for others, in doing so:
  • Participating in the review and use of appropriate health and safety policies, protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and job hazard assessments (JHAs).
  • Maintains work areas and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), in a neat and tidy condition and in good working order.
  • Wears PPE appropriate for the nature of work being performed at all times.
  • Attends daily toolbox meetings, health and safety, and operational planning sessions with site management.[SW1] [RJ2] [SK3]
  • Supports appropriate health and safety personnel in the development of policies and procedures.
  • Acts as a representative of the company as necessary or appropriate for any relevant agency inspections and interactions.[CS4] [SK5]

Key Responsibilities

  1. Construction Readiness & Baseline Governance

Ensure the project is structurally ready for predictable construction execution.

  • Establish the project controls framework and confirm readiness before major construction spend.
  • Govern alignment of WBS, budgets, schedules, progress measurement, and reporting structures.
  • Provide formal readiness assessments and identify structural gaps to executive leadership.
  1. Integrated Controls Systems & Performance Standards

Define and enforce a single, integrated system of project truth.

  • Govern integrated cost, schedule, risk, change, progress, and document control systems.
  • Establish performance measurement standards, KPIs, and assurance routines across owners and contractors.
  • Ensure consistent, auditable reporting that supports executive decision‑making.
  1. Schedule, Cost, Risk & Change Control

Protect baseline integrity and forecast reliability.

  • Own the integrated master schedule, cost baseline, and forecasting discipline.
  • Govern risk management and formal change control to ensure early warning and baseline integrity.
  • Provide executive insight into critical path, cost exposure, contingency, and emerging risks.
  1. Contractor, Procurement & Logistics Integration

Ensure delivery partners are aligned with the project control framework.

  • Define and enforce contractor controls requirements and baseline approval processes.
  • Integrate procurement, contracting, and logistics into cost, schedule, and risk baselines.
  • Provide independent assurance of contractor data quality, delivery risk, and reporting discipline.
  1. Quality, Information & Organizational Leadership

Ensure the controls organization and information environment support execution.

  • Build and lead the project controls organization with clear roles, standards, and accountability.
  • Govern document management and quality systems to ensure auditable, compliant project records.
  • Ensure quality, inspection, and turnover data are fully integrated into performance reporting.

Skills and Experience Required:

Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.

  • Professional designation preferred (PE, PMP, AACE, or equivalent).
  • 10 years of construction and capital project experience.
  • Significant underground or heavy civil construction exposure.
  • Experience in establishing project controls systems from the early project phase; project set-up from pre-construction preferred.
  • Demonstrated owner-side or Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) major project experience.
  • Significant Primavera P6 experience.
  • Experience implementing cost control systems.
  • Experience with multi-contractor delivery environments.
