Software Documentation information

What is software documentation?

A Software Documentation job involves creating, organizing, and maintaining technical documents that explain how software works. This includes user manuals, API documentation, FAQs, and developer guides. The role requires strong writing skills, technical understanding, and the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, user-friendly content. Professionals in this role often collaborate with developers, product managers, and designers to ensure accuracy and completeness of documentation.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in software documentation?

Professionals in Software Documentation spend their days creating, updating, and organizing user manuals, API documentation, release notes, and help guides for software products. They often collaborate with software developers, product managers, and QA engineers to obtain technical information, clarify product details, and ensure documentation accuracy. Regular tasks may include researching new features, testing software to verify instructions, and maintaining documentation repositories. This role requires balancing multiple projects and consistently delivering clear, concise information that helps users and teams understand complex software systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in software documentation, and why are they important?

To excel in Software Documentation, you need strong technical writing skills, an understanding of software engineering concepts, and often a relevant degree in English, Communications, or Computer Science. Proficiency with authoring tools like Microsoft Word, MadCap Flare, or Adobe FrameMaker, and familiarity with version control systems such as Git, are typically expected; certifications like Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC) can be beneficial. Excellent attention to detail, organizational abilities, and teamwork skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies ensure that documentation is accurate, user-friendly, and effectively supports both end-users and development teams.

What is the role of software documentation?

Software documentation is the process of creating and maintaining written guides, manuals, and technical specifications that explain how software works, how to use it, and how to troubleshoot issues. It helps developers, users, and support teams understand the software, ensuring proper implementation and maintenance. Clear documentation often involves using tools like Markdown or DITA and requires strong technical writing skills.

Job Description
Description
SAIC is seeking a Software Developer to support cutting-edge mission systems development at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane. This position directly supports integrated sensor, radar, and C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) software development efforts for airborne surveillance and reconnaissance platforms.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on Linux development experience and a strong background supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Department of the Navy (DoN) programs with a passion for delivering mission-critical capabilities to warfighters.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, integrate, and test software components for embedded and mission systems supporting airborne C5ISR platforms
  • Develop and maintain software in Linux-based environments, including real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded Linux distributions
  • Support integration of sensors, radar systems, and communications equipment into unified mission system architectures
  • Contribute to software development efforts enabling aircrew to gather, process, fuse, and transmit surveillance and reconnaissance data to other platforms and units during flight operations
  • Participate in full software development lifecycle (SDLC) activities including requirements analysis, design, coding, unit testing, integration testing, and documentation
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, hardware engineers, and government stakeholders to define and implement software interfaces and data links
  • Support software builds, configuration management, and version control using tools such as Git, Jenkins, or similar CI/CD pipelines
  • Develop and maintain software in languages including C, C++, Java, and/or Python within Linux environments
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving software defects identified during lab, ground, and flight test activities
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation including Software Design Documents (SDD), Interface Control Documents (ICD), and test procedures in compliance with DoD standards (e.g., MIL-STD-498, DI-IPSC)
  • Participate in program reviews, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), and design reviews (PDR/CDR)

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • 2 years of professional software development experience
  • Proficiency in Linux-based development environments (Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS, or similar)
  • Strong programming skills in C, C++, Java, and/or Python
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, SVN, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with software integration and testing methodologies
  • Must be local to or willing to relocate to the Crane, Indiana area, this position is on-site at NSWC Crane

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience supporting DoD or Department of the Navy (DoN) acquisition programs
  • Prior work on C5ISR, ISR, or mission systems programs - particularly airborne surveillance, reconnaissance, or multi-sensor integration platforms (experience with programs similar to Minotaur Mission System or equivalent highly desired)
  • Familiarity with sensor and radar data processing, including data fusion, signal processing pipelines, or sensor-to-shooter workflows
  • Experience with data link protocols and communications systems (e.g., Link 16, CDL, TTNT, or similar)
  • Knowledge of real-time systems development and embedded software
  • Experience with MIL-STD and DO-178C software development standards
  • Familiarity with FACE (Future Airborne Capability Environment) or MOSA (Modular Open Systems Approach) architectures
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Podman) in classified or secure environments
  • Prior experience working on-site at a Naval or DoD installation

Required Security Clearance:
  • Must be able to obtain a Secret security clearance. Can start once interim clearance is granted. SAIC will sponsor the clearance process
