Job description

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.
Job Summary
This position develops and supports secure, accessible web applications and application programming interfaces (API) used in NIH-funded and privately funded research studies. Working closely with investigators, research teams, and technical partners, the Research Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, integrates, and maintains reliable software solutions that support research operations, data exchange, data collection, and study objectives.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, document, and support APIs and web applications for research studies.
  • Develop and maintain secure, reliable, and reusable APIs that enable data exchange between research applications and external systems.
  • Develop responsive user interfaces and reusable application components using modern JavaScript technologies.
  • Develop and maintain server-side applications, services, integrations, and APIs.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot APIs and applications, resolve defects and integration issues, and improve reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with investigators, research staff, and technical stakeholders to define API, integration, and application requirements.
  • Apply appropriate practices for API authentication and authorization, application security, accessibility, testing, source control, and code review.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation for APIs, application architecture, integrations, deployments, and issue resolutions.
  • Help ensure the secure and appropriate handling of sensitive research information.
  • Contribute to project planning, technical design, effort estimation, and continuous improvement.
General Responsibilities
  • Provide experienced design, development, testing, and configuration of software systems and computer programs.
  • Perform experienced analysis, programming, troubleshooting, bug-fixing, and tuning of new and existing software.
  • Consult with stakeholders/clients to review existing software solutions; develop new functionality and/or write new code as needed; advise clients on critical decisions regarding information technology to improve overall business process efficiency.
  • Determine program module test procedures, generate required test data, and execute testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with other technical staff and stakeholders/clients to ensure optimum functionality, performance, accessibility, scalability, and security of supported software.
  • Document software development efforts (changes, new functionality, issue/problem resolution).
  • Provide documentation, information, and training through formal and informal communications to end users, departments, and internal staff.
  • Contribute to project planning, formulating objectives, estimating tasks; perform studies to include feasibility, conceptual design, cost/benefit analysis, development and implementation planning.
  • Ensure that all protocols used in the development and maintenance of software is up to date and compliant with university policies and standards; research and stays up-to-date on new industry software development standards, emerging technology, UX/UI design/philosophy, and accessibility standards.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, business systems, or a related field).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years of software development or related experience.
Preferred
  • Experience with automated testing, source control, code review, and modern software-development practices.
  • Experience supporting research, healthcare, higher education, or another environment involving sensitive or regulated information.
  • Experience collaborating with technical and nontechnical stakeholders to define requirements and deliver software solutions.
  • Experience with API authentication and authorization, error handling, versioning, monitoring, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Experience integrating applications with internal or third-party APIs and external data systems.

Working Conditions / Demands

This position is grant funded with expected annual renewals. Renewals are contingent on the availability of grant funds.

This is a fully remote position. However, this is subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
Advertised Salary
$68,000.00 - 78,000.00 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
