The Software Development Engineer IV performs a pivotal role in ensuring the success of enterprise software development projects by providing technical leadership, team guidance, and oversight to our development teams. This role requires a combination of technical expertise (analyze, design, code, test & debug), communication skills, leadership abilities, and the capability to monitor project outcomes and make data-driven decisions to enhance the delivery of software. Ensures that solutions are consistent with organization's objectives. Demonstrating specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise. Focuses on highly complex enterprise solution delivery.

What You'll Do
  • Define, design and implement feature development with focus on technical direction, quality, usability and performance leveraging data to make decisions.
  • Partner with business and IT leaders to identify and understand multi-faceted problems or improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with the development teams, business partners, architecture, and customers to understand project requirements, provide technical excellence and oversight, and resolve technical challenges guaranteeing code quality.
  • Participate in live site operations with emphasis on timely response, delivery and satisfaction for customers.
  • Serve as the primary engineering and strategic implementation partners, ensuring clear, effective , and timely communication.
  • Oversee the review process of code, ensuring compliance with best practices, Premera standards, and architectural guidelines. Responsible for vendor oversight and code sign-off ensuring an effective relationship and high-quality outcomes of vendor work.
  • Responsible for monitoring key performance indicators and ensuring successful project outcomes..
  • Analyze project data and metrics to identify trends, patterns, and areas of concern, and make data-driven recommendations to enhance the delivery of software.
  • Train and enforce governance processes to ensure compliance with company standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee engineering excellence and continuous automation. This includes testing associated with cross-functional project team and in-team efforts.
  • Sign off appropriate technical or architectural documentation and notifications for changes to production systems or fixes to production problems are completed and that SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) artifacts were created.
  • Act as technical and business leader sharing knowledge, and expertise with others inside team as well as with other customers. Proactively contribute to knowledge sharing across Premera developer community.
  • Stay current in best practices, technology trends and the organization's business while mentoring and sharing knowledge gained with others. Maintain expertise in one or more technical areas. Provide advice and mentoring to other engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or information systems
  • Eight (8) years of software development experience, knowledge of software development lifecycle, and skills to utilize one or more programming languages

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with cloud solutions.
  • Experience in healthcare industry or a highly regulated environment.
  • Technical knowledge and experience with specific technical tools used at Premera (i.e. Facets) or required for open position.
  • Previous experience in an agile environment.
  • Exposure to API and service-based technologies.
  • Experience using and creating automated test tools.

  • Demonstrated expertise in development of systems, applications and tools that solve business problems and improve effectiveness of business solutions.
  • Deep technical knowledge in at least one area/technology and demonstrated deep hands-on expertise in multiple disparate technologies. Demonstrated ability to think in terms of architecture. Demonstrated experience building multiple, high performance, stable and scalable solutions that have been deployed in enterprise setting.
  • Strong team player with ability to influence and bring together differing points of view.
  • Ability to continually evolve technical knowledge and skills. Experience providing advice and mentoring to less experienced staff.
  • Experience playing a leading role in implementation and deployment of successful enterprise-level system.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and good presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience.
The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.
National Plus Salary Range:
$135,600.00 - $230,500.00
*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
