What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Job description

Product & Business Development Manager - Professional Series Off-Road Lighting
Hillsboro, New Hampshire, United States
Sense the power of light
ams OSRAM is a global leader in innovative light and sensor solutions. "Sense the power of light" - our success is based on our deep understanding of the potential of light. By adding intelligence to light, we enable our customers to drive transformative applications. Our around 20,000 employees worldwide focus on innovation alongside the societal megatrends of digitalization, smart living, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Whatever your role is, you are a part of a talented team that enjoys exploring and designing new technologies.
Your new responsibilities
As the Product Manager, Business Development for Professional Series Off-Road Lighting, you will own the product line end-to-end: from strategy and roadmap through launch, commercialization, and P&L performance. You will pair the rigor of product management with the curiosity and drive of business development, turning market insight into winning products and the channel partnerships that scale them. As part of the North America Product Line Management team, you will work with cross-functional partners across the US, Germany, and China to shape roadmaps, build partnerships, and achieve revenue and margin targets. Success in this role comes from strong commercial and analytical instincts, a genuine interest in the off-road market, and the drive to move products from concept to market.
  • Product Line Ownership & P&L: Own the full lifecycle and P&L for the Professional Series lightbar and light pod portfolio including pricing, margin, positioning, and profitability.
  • Market Analysis: Conduct market research to identify trends, customer needs, and the competitive landscape across off-road, overland, powersports, and work-truck segments.
  • Business Strategy: Develop and execute business development plans aligned with company goals and backed by clear analysis and rationale. Identify new business opportunities, shape market-entry strategies, and leverage your network to gain a competitive edge.
  • Product Development: Partner closely with product management and engineering teams (US, EU, and China) to drive development of innovative off-road products, and ensure they meet market demands and exceed customer expectations.
  • Channel & Partner Development: Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing accounts while actively pursuing new partnerships across distribution partners, distributors, retailers, installers, jobbers, and OE / upfit channels. Understand partner requirements and present tailored lighting solutions that demonstrate the value of SYLVANIA's Professional Series products.
  • Sales Performance: Lead the commercial process from prospecting to deal closure. Prepare compelling presentations, proposals, and negotiations that showcase the unique benefits of our products, and own the numbers against revenue and margin targets.
  • Marketing Support: Work with marketing to research, plan, and execute successful product launches and promotional campaigns. Align on messaging, content, and go-to-market materials that communicate product value to new and existing customers.
  • Sales & Business Analytics: Own and maintain the business case and financial models for the portfolio. Monitor performance metrics, analyze data in Excel and BI tools, and provide regular reporting to management; use insights to refine strategy and optimize results.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead cross-functional teams through the product line's priorities and share your expertise with colleagues along the way. Influence and align stakeholders across functions and geographies without direct authority.

Who we are looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, or a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in product management and/or business development, ideally within the automotive off-road, powersports, overland, or accessories / performance industry - experience with off-road lighting products is a plus.
  • Demonstrated P&L ownership, with a track record of growing revenue and margin for a product or product line.
  • Experience with new / innovative product development and managing products from concept to launch.
  • Strong analytical skills, with solid proficiency in Microsoft Excel for financial modeling, pricing, and business-case analysis.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with industry stakeholders, channel partners, and customers.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, ERP and CRM software.
