What does a software development manager do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development manager?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, leadership experience, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and sometimes certifications like PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to motivate and mentor teams are critical soft skills. These competencies ensure successful project delivery, foster team development, and align technical efforts with business goals.

How does a software development manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

Through its affiliates, Interactive Brokers provides automated trade execution and custody of securities, commodities, foreign exchange, and prediction markets on over 170 markets in numerous countries and currencies.

For more than four decades, Interactive Brokers has focused on technology, automation, and innovation to provide clients worldwide with a sophisticated, unified platform to manage their investment portfolios. We serve individual investors, hedge funds, proprietary trading groups, financial advisors, and introducing brokers.

Our culture is driven by problem-solving, efficiency, and continuous improvement. We look for individuals who are intellectually curious, collaborative, and motivated to contribute to technology that helps simplify and enhance access to global financial markets. Interactive Brokers has consistently been recognized as a top broker by respected industry sources including Barron’s, Investopedia, Stockbrokers.com, and others.

This is a hybrid role (3 days in the office/2 days remote).

About your team:

The Interactive Brokers Trading team is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to join the group building the high-performance, scalable trading application that our clients use to trade stocks, futures, options, and other financial instruments. The platform is mature and feature-rich, and we are continuously extending it with new capabilities, improving performance, and refining the experience for a demanding global user base. You will contribute to a Java-based product that our customers rely on in real time.

What will be your responsibilities within IBKR:
  • Design, develop, and maintain features across the trading application, with a primary focus on the Java business layer.
  • Integrate with backend services over REST, WebSockets, and FIX to deliver responsive, reliable functionality to end users.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, unit testing, code review, and ongoing maintenance of the features you deliver.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, product managers, and other developers to translate requirements into high-quality software.
  • Write and maintain clear technical documentation for the code and designs you produce.
  • Investigate and resolve complex technical issues across the stack.
  • Stay current with relevant tools, libraries, and techniques that can improve the platform.
Skills Required:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a minimum of 3 years of professional software development experience, or a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java, with a deep understanding of object-oriented programming and software design patterns.
  • Solid software development fundamentals, including writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code and producing clear documentation.
  • Working knowledge of multithreading and concurrency, with an appreciation for lean, low-latency programming.
  • Proficiency with Git for source control and collaborative development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across a large codebase.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
To be successful in this position, you should be:
  • Experience with declarative, state-driven UI frameworks (React Native, Flutter, QML, etc.); prior Qt/QML experience is a plus, but genuine interest in learning it is equally valued.
  • Prior work on financial trading platforms and familiarity with instruments such as stocks, futures, and options, or a strong interest in learning the domain.
  • Exposure to Linux as a development or deployment environment.
  • Working familiarity with Gradle as a build automation tool.
  • Awareness of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code and other agentic coding tools.
  • Comfortable working within an established codebase, following existing architectural patterns, team conventions, and development protocols.
  • Able to ramp up quickly on a mature platform and deliver incremental value while respecting existing design decisions.
  • Flexible and pragmatic, with the judgment to know when to follow precedent and when to raise a well-reasoned alternative.
  • Self-motivated and able to handle tasks with minimal supervision in a fast-paced team.
  • High-ownership mindset, taking features from design through delivery and standing behind their quality.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
Company Benefits & Perks
  • Competitive salary, annual performance-based bonus, and stock grant awards
  • 401(k) retirement plan with competitive company match
  • Excellent health and wellness benefits, including medical, dental, and vision benefits. 100% employer-paid medical premiums, with generous employer contributions to dental & vision plans as well.
  • Wellness screening and assessments, health coaches, and counseling services through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Generous paid parental leave (up to 16 weeks paid parental leave for eligible employees)
