Software Development Assistant information

What does a software development assistant do?

A Software Development Assistant supports software engineers and developers by performing tasks such as writing basic code, testing software, documenting processes, and helping manage project workflows. They may also assist with troubleshooting issues, maintaining databases, and preparing reports. This role helps ensure the smooth progress of development projects and provides valuable support to the software development team.

What are the typical responsibilities of a software development assistant in a project team?

As a Software Development Assistant, your daily tasks often include supporting developers with code documentation, managing version control repositories, conducting basic testing, and tracking project issues or bugs. You may also assist with preparing development environments, updating project management tools, and collaborating closely with both developers and QA testers to ensure smooth project workflows. This role is an excellent entry point for building your technical and collaboration skills while gaining exposure to the full software development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Assistant, you need foundational programming knowledge, familiarity with software development processes, and often a degree or coursework in computer science or a related field. Experience with version control systems like Git, basic coding tools (e.g., IDEs), and project management platforms is typically required. Job description

Who We Are
Founded in 1980 as Aardvark Financial, TransMarket Group (TMG) is a privately held global markets proprietary trading firm in Chicago. We use next-generation technology to capture opportunities around the world and manage risk in financial markets. Our mission is to bless others through the services we provide and through the generous stewardship of the wealth we create.
TMG is a well-established and profitable business as a respected member of the global financial system for over 40 years, but also is like a startup because the potential of our group is at least one order of magnitude greater than what we are currently producing. We have an entrepreneurial culture and collaboratively develop our business with patience and discipline; we work hard, learn constantly, and relentlessly improve our expertise.
Description
Our Software development team designs and builds low-latency systems that allow us to trade a diverse set of instruments across a wide range of financial marketplaces. This smaller, focused team comes with a high degree of responsibility and ownership. Our systems aim to be clean and understandable while achieving low latency and robust error tolerance. The libraries you work on will become the engine of our firm's strategies.
Responsibilities
  • Work with Sr. Software Developers to assist and learn all facets of software development applied to the automated trading business
  • Develop, code, maintain, and support production-quality automated components for global proprietary trading
  • Develop expertise in software development principles, C++, and high-performance automated trading systems
  • Collaborate with technology, software, trading, business, and accounting/finance teams

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative or technical field
  • Passion for software and math applied to markets and trading
  • Strong understanding of computing, math, probability, statistics, and finance is also preferred
  • Programming proficiency and experience (C++, Python). Linux scripting is a plus
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done
  • Excellent technical and non-technical communication skills
  • This position requires physical presence and is onsite (no remote work)

Benefits
We offer one of the most generous profit sharing programs in the industry because we believe our employees should be able to take part in our rapid growth and success. We are proud to offer more world-class benefits for our full-time employees and their families.
TransMarket Group is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, national origin, marital status, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other protected status.
