What is a software configuration manager?

A Software Configuration Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and controlling changes to software products throughout their lifecycle. They manage configuration processes, version control, and ensure consistency, traceability, and quality of software releases. Their work involves setting up and maintaining tools for source control, coordinating with development and operations teams, and enforcing policies for software builds and deployments. This role is critical for minimizing errors, tracking changes, and supporting compliance in software development projects.

What do software configuration managers do?

The job duties of a software configuration manager involve overseeing the build and release of software. Your responsibilities in this career include version control to track revisions made to the source code of programs, and you may use a GIT system to track such changes. You test and refine the software coding so that it remains appropriately configured throughout the development process. As a manager, you may hire employees or contract with third parties to perform the tasks required by your employer or client.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software configuration manager, and why are they important?

A Software Configuration Manager needs a solid understanding of software development processes, version control, and change management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools like Git, Jenkins, or Ansible, and certifications such as ITIL or CMII, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure seamless collaboration across development and operations teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining software integrity, enabling efficient releases, and minimizing errors in complex software environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software configuration managers, and how can they be addressed?

Software Configuration Managers often encounter challenges such as managing complex version control systems, ensuring consistent documentation, and coordinating changes across multiple teams. To address these, it's important to establish clear configuration management processes, maintain thorough communication with development and QA teams, and use automation tools to streamline build and release cycles. Proactively resolving conflicts and regularly updating configuration baselines also help minimize disruptions and maintain project integrity.

What is the difference between Software Configuration Manager vs Software Release Manager?

Understanding these distinctions helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals to each area.

Job description

Description:

Who We Are:

Dedicated to making a difference in law enforcement agencies across the U.S., our mission is to transform policing by elevating officer performance with a preventative-based early intervention system. Driven by data science and powered by machine learning, our offering analyzes officer performance data in order to identify potentially problematic behavior. In partnership with the University of Chicago, we’ve developed the world’s largest multi-jurisdictional officer performance database, and the only research-driven, evidence-based early intervention system available in policing today.

We’re also the only provider of a fully integrated, cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that simplifies essential policing workflows. This platform is designed to be a single-source solution for all operational needs, driving extensive efficiency gains and providing best-in-class advanced analytics and insights.

Benchmark Analytics provides a comprehensive, all-in-one solution that is advancing police force management through state-of-the-art technology and market-leading data and analytics.

The Role:

In this customer-facing role, you will drive configuration and optimization of our SaaS platform with speed and precision. You will work as part of a dedicated delivery pod — partnering with a Data Engineer and a Reporting Analyst, and reporting to a Project Manager — jointly accountable for the end-to-end success of every agency in a shared book of accounts. Working in an Agile cadence, you will translate customer needs into scalable, best-practice configurations, and partner with your pod and the broader Configuration practice to continuously refine how we deliver.

Responsibilities:

  • Work within an Agile framework to iteratively configure and deploy SaaS solutions
  • Engage in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to ensure continuous improvement
  • Rapidly translate customer needs into configurable solutions that align with best practice
  • Partner with police and government agencies to understand their workflows and operational needs
  • Analyze and model business processes using BPMN to document and optimize workflows
  • Document and communicate configuration changes effectively across teams
  • Conduct configuration testing and validation before deployment
  • Create user guides and training materials for configured solutions
  • Participate in customer training sessions and knowledge transfer
  • Gather and incorporate customer feedback to enhance future configurations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with project management, product, and support teams to refine implementation processes
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of configurations, system settings, and best practices
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve configuration-related issues in an Agile, iterative manner
  • Ensure compliance with security, data integrity, and regulatory requirements

Job Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of BPMN 2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation) with proven ability to model business processes effectively
  • Proficient in JIRA, Confluence, and BPMN tools
  • 1+ years of data analysis experience using SQL, Python, or other scripting languages
  • Knowledgeable in data standardization, data mapping, and reporting
  • Strong technical aptitude with ability to quickly learn new products and technical skills
  • Excellent data sense with ability to identify patterns and understand central tendencies in both qualitative and quantitative data
  • Strong problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail
  • Enjoys working with data, testing assumptions, and conducting exploratory data analysis
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies including Scrum and Kanban
  • Experience with iterative implementation processes
  • 4+ years in technology/software implementation
  • 4+ years in a SaaS environment, preferably with Enterprise customers
  • Experience working with government agencies or law enforcement (preferred)
  • 2+ years of consulting experience
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex concepts clearly
  • Ability to communicate concisely and persuasively with customers, product managers, and engineers
  • Independent self-starter who enjoys taking on new challenges and running with them
  • Thrives in collaborative, fast-paced environments
  • Comfortable under pressure with high-stakes deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Passionate about the Benchmark Analytics mission and improving outcomes in the public sector
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% for customer meetings

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off.
  • Ability to work in a fully remote environment (must be based in the U.S. and willing to work in Central Time Zone).
  • Summer Half-Day Fridays.
  • Freed Up Fridays during Spring, Fall, and Winter months to promote productivity and dedicated heads-down work time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision plan offerings along with 401(k).
  • Employer-paid Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance.
  • Other Voluntary Benefits include additional Life Insurance, Spouse Life Insurance, and Accident Insurance.
  • The satisfaction that comes with being part of a solution that has real impact in the world.
  • A diverse workforce and inclusive environment that embraces unique contributions and experiences.
  • An empowered culture that encourages creativity and professional growth.

Estimated Annual Salary Range:

$120k-$150k; based on role, experience, and location

  • Benchmark Analytics is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity of all kinds in our effort to create a stellar workforce of committed and passionate team members.
