Job description

The First Assistant functions under the supervision of a physician and performs delegated functions such as planning, preparing and setting up for cases, and managing supplies and equipment. The work that is performed is done under the established policies and procedures of the institution and according to the experience and scope of educational requirements of the individual and applicable legal guidelines. The First Assistant will be expected to anticipate the needs of the patient and physician and make decisions within the scope of their practice. The First Assistant responsibilities pertain to the clinical responsibilities required for direct preoperative and postoperative patient care.

Associates or bachelor's degree in nursing or completion of an Operating Room Technical program in a technical or junior college or completion of an acceptable hospital program unless trained through previous experience. Previous O.R. and RN experience preferred. Current licensure in State of Alabama as a Registered Nurse or completion of an Operating Room Technical program in a technical or junior college or completion of an acceptable hospital program unless trained through previous experience. Surgery equipment/instrumentation, other medical equipment used in patient care. Telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software. Good verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills, and time management skills. Knows sterile technique. Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff, physicians and patients. Proficiency with clinical nursing tasks. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions. Visual and hearing acuity. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to assist in lifting, pushing and pulling patients/equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate small sutures/instruments and to manipulate patient care equipment. Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods. Ability to meet the attendance requirements of the job.
