Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Tailings & Water Engineer works closely with the Sr. Tailings and Water Engineer to support safe and effective performance of the site’s water systems and tailings storage facility (TSF) under the Capstone Tailings Management System. Partner with operations teams to optimize water use, ensure proper TSF construction, and manage tailings in line with the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Manual.

  • Demonstrate commitment to safety and Capstone’s Values in Action.
  • Safety & Values Leadership: Exemplify Capstone Copper’s values and ensure all work complies with MSHA regulations, Pinto Valley Mine policies, and site safety standards. Maintain required certifications for assigned tasks.
  • Tailings Management System: Apply and monitor Capstone’s Tailings Management System to align with best practices and industry standards (ICMM, MAC, CDA, GISTM). Track compliance, report status, and implement improvement plans.
  • Water & Tailings Monitoring: Support the Tailings and Water Quality Control Program by planning instrumentation, evaluating new technology, and analyzing monitoring data to assess water performance, TSF stability, and deposition efficiency.
  • Planning & Technical Support: Prepare water system strategies, tailings deposition and water removal plans, and scopes of work. Provide technical review of consultant and EoR deliverables, and follow up on TSF operations and projects.
  • QA/QC & Risk Management: Develop QA/QC and safety plans for tailings and water systems. Support creation of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), alarms, and alert levels to ensure proactive risk management.
  • Reporting & Compliance: Develop and manage reporting for GISTM, ICMM, and state agencies. Coordinate internal inspections, external reviews (ITRB, EoR, regulators), and ensure timely implementation of recommendations.
  • Performance & Continuous Improvement: Assist in developing and tracking KPIs, forecasts, and Opex/Capex budgets. Identify system improvements and collaborate with senior engineers and superintendents to resolve issues.
  • Mentorship & Training: Mentor junior engineers and provide training for supervisors and operators on water system performance, TSF stability, OMS, and Emergency Action Plans.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and initiative.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in: Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Mine Engineering.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Strong time management skills required
  • Knowledge of water systems and TSF design, construction, operation, maintenance, and surveillance
  • Knowledge in the principles of soil/rock/fluid mechanics, water modeling, stability analysis and general geotechnical and hydro engineering
  • Knowledge of general civil engineering principles
  • Knowledge of survey equipment, procedures, and principles

Preferred

  • 4+ years in the field of water or tailings or relevant engineering field

All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required. Capstone maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace.
