Job description

The DEI Specialist is a crucial team member to the Finger Lakes Community College community and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Working under the direction of the Chief Diversity Officer, in collaboration with the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership as well as other Academic & Student Affairs units. Will work to integrate monthly educational programs, trainings and activities in order to enhance the academic and student life experiences of all students. Special emphasis on underrepresented student populations awareness and support. They will provide advisement, oversight and guidance to designated diversity, equity, and inclusion populations/student organizations, and other multicultural/special population student groups as they are created and formed. The DEI Specialist will need to be flexible in their scheduling.

The DEI Specialist is expected to maintain and develop various aspects (i.e. database, assessments, learning outcomes and marketing, etc.) of the designed programs.

The DEI Specialist reports to the Chief Diversity Officer and serves as an ex-officio member of the FLCC Student Corporation Board of Directors and may be invited on a weekly basis to the Student Corporation Executive Board to ensure collaboration and strong communication between the three areas.

This is a part-time, grant-funded position.

1. Qualifications:

Educational Background: Associates Degree preferred. Successful completion of 36 credits completed from an accredited higher education institution required.

Experience: One-year experience working with students in a college setting (e.g., residential life, student government, campus activities, student clubs/organizations, etc.) required. Experience working with students of color and underrepresented student populations strongly desired. Preference given for graduate or professional experiences. Experience with large event planning (e.g., orientation) strongly desired.

Special Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills required. Must be able to work cooperatively with College departments and other entities in coordinating co- curricular programs. Have a strong background in social media and other promotion/marketing experience. Knowledgeable of student leadership development delivery methods, student development issues, experiential leadership and awareness of the needs of traditional and non- traditional students, as well as strategies that promote student engagement, success and completion.

2. Essential Functions:

Activity Management

  1. Advises/mentors designated diversity, equity, and inclusion student organizations and future student groups on main campus in consultation with the Chief Diversity Officer and the Directors of the Center for Student Involvement and Student Well-Being.

  2. Monitors website and office publications for effectiveness and efficiency including social media related to diversity, equity, and inclusion development programs. Ensures all media and marketing conforms to the Colleges policies and procedures.

  3. Attends regional and local trainings and conferences with student staff, when appropriate.

  4. Develops, coordinates and implements a minimum of 10 programs per academic year focused on DEI programming including but not limited to social identity, intersectionality, privilege and oppression, etc. Hosts additional programming that enhance students connection with the College and promote academic success and completion.

  5. Assists with the implementation of a college-wide, academic year student development program for emerging, transitional, underrepresented student populations and seasoned student leaders.

  6. Serves as a mentor and guide to the students in the co-curricular programs, with special attention given to underrepresented student populations.

Additional Communication and Outreach

  1. The DEI Specialist will work with key stakeholders on campus to welcome international students to the FLCC community.

Assessment

  1. Under the direction of the Office of DEI, supports continual assessments of the effectiveness of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts at FLCC specifically focused on the student experience.

Other

  1. Under the direction of the Chief Diversity Officer, maintains and upholds the student-focused efforts connected to the FLCC DEI strategic plan and serves on campus committees when appropriate.

  2. Manages the budget for programming in alignment with all College and/or Corporation Funding guidelines.
