Smoking Aide

Position Summary

The Smoking Aide is responsible for overseeing and supervising resident smoking activities in designated outdoor smoking areas in accordance with facility policies and safety standards. This position provides support to residents who wish to smoke throughout the day, ensuring safe access, appropriate supervision, and a positive resident experience. The Smoking Aide works under the direction of the licensed nurse supervisor and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to maintain resident safety and compliance with facility regulations.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Supervises residents during smoking activities in designated outdoor smoking areas and ensures compliance with facility smoking policies and safety procedures.

  • Provides residents access to smoking opportunities throughout the day during scheduled working hours rather than limiting smoking to designated smoking times.

  • Monitors residents for safety concerns during smoking activities and promptly reports any changes in condition, concerns, or incidents to the licensed nurse supervisor.

  • Assists residents with transportation to and from designated smoking areas as needed and in accordance with their care plans.

  • Maintains a safe and clean smoking environment, ensuring proper disposal of smoking materials and adherence to fire safety regulations.

  • Ensures smoking supplies, designated smoking receptacles, and outdoor smoking areas remain organized, clean, and properly maintained.

  • Maintains resident smoking schedules, logs, or documentation as required by facility policy.

  • Encourages resident independence while providing supervision necessary to ensure resident safety.

  • Assists with resident engagement and social interaction during smoking periods while maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Communicates effectively with nursing staff regarding resident whereabouts, smoking activity, and any observed concerns.

  • Responds appropriately to emergencies and follows facility procedures related to fire safety, resident accidents, or medical events.

  • Performs other non-direct care duties as assigned by facility leadership.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and responsibly while supervising multiple residents.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to safely transport residents utilizing wheelchairs or other mobility equipment when necessary.

  • Knowledge of fire safety principles and resident supervision practices preferred.

  • Current BLS/CPR certification preferred.

  • Experience working in a healthcare, long-term care, assisted living, or senior services environment preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily works outdoors in designated smoking areas and may be exposed to varying weather conditions.

  • Regular walking, standing, pushing wheelchairs, and assisting residents with transportation throughout the facility.

  • Exposure to tobacco smoke during resident smoking activities.
