Job description

Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor. The position is offered by SMR LLC as a member of the Holtec International family, a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.
The Sr. SmartPlant Piping Designer will work within SMR's Design Development team to design and model piping systems for the dual-unit SMR-300 project, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Will coordinate to deploy, change, and manage work, processes, and practices across multiple disciplines (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Nuclear, Safety Analysis, Process/Systems, etc.) and partners to facilitate efficient delivery of the expanding scope define in an integrated project schedule. The Sr. SmartPlant Piping Design will be expected to serve as a lead member of a team comprised of other designers, engineers, adjuncts, and project staff. Will be expected to identify areas of improvement and initiate changes.
The ideal Sr. SmartPlant Piping Designer will have at least 15 years of piping design experience, including at least 6 years in a senior role using SmartPlant 3D. The ideal candidate will also have experience with EPC projects (e.g., nuclear power plants), project management, construction, and commissioning. They should have skills and experience preparing piping material take-offs, fabrication drawings, and use of piping codes, such as ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
Specific Areas of Responsibility:
  • 3D Piping Design & Modeling
    • Develop detailed 3D piping layouts in SP3D in accordance with project specifications.
    • Mentor and train junior team members to enhance their skills and knowledge
    • Identify and troubleshoot any design issues that may arise during the project
    • Review, check and approve designs created by junior team members to ensure accuracy and quality
    • Generate piping general arrangements (GAs), isometric drawings, and piping Bills of Material (BOM).
    • Perform equipment and piping modeling, including specialty items, and tie-ins.
    • Attend project meetings and provide updates on the status of designs.
  • Project Coordination
    • Review and interpret P&IDs, equipment GA drawings, and client technical specifications.
    • Lead model reviews at differing stages using Navisworks.
    • Coordinate with civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical disciplines for clash resolution and interface management.
    • Work closely with other team members, including engineers, project managers, and supporting staff, to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Drawing & Documentation
    • Extract and check fabrication isometrics and GAs for quality and compliance.
    • Perform vendor drawing reviews and provide technical clearance for manufacturing.
    • Ensure design deliverables meet project schedules and quality requirements.
  • SP3D Administration & Customization
    • Collaborate to customize isometric and report templates in coordination with System Admin and Technical Lead.
    • Implement and manage clash detection reports and resolve issues promptly.
  • Field & Fabrication Support
    • Provide technical support during fabrication, erection, and pre-commissioning.
    • Conduct site visits to resolve engineering queries and improve field productivity.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, related field of engineering, or applicable experience.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in piping design and EPC projects (e.g., in power, oil & gas, water treatment, nuclear).
  • Demonstrated experience with plant systems, including steam, water, air, electric, and waste systems.
  • Vert strong (expert) proficiency in SP3D and Navisworks.
  • Strong proficiency in communication and interdisciplinary coordination with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., vendors).
  • Strong understanding of codes and standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and computer skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and capable of producing error-free documents.
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license.

  • LEAN experience (product or process workflow improvement, including Six Sigma).

Salary: $155,000.00-$180,000.00
