PRIMARY JOB GOAL: The School Van Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and sporting events. The primary focus is maintaining a safe, respectful, and supervised environment within the vehicle while strictly adhering to all traffic laws and school district policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Drive designated routes to pick up and drop off students at scheduled stops.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections (checking tires, lights, brakes, oil, and fuel) to ensure the van is in safe operating condition.
- Maintain order and discipline among passengers; report any behavioral incidents to school administration.
- Ensure all students are properly secured (seat belts, car seats, or wheelchair tie-downs where applicable) and follow emergency evacuation procedures.
- Keep the interior of the van clean and sanitized; report any mechanical malfunctions to the maintenance department immediately.
- Maintain accurate logs of mileage, fuel consumption, student attendance, and any incidents or delays.
- Maintain regular, consistent, and timely attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal and the Director of Transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Valid Michigan driver's license and Chauffeur's license.
- A clean driving record with minimal to no points or recent suspensions.
- Must pass a criminal background check, fingerprinting, and drug/alcohol screening.
- Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical or similar medical examination.
- Strong communication and patience with children.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to work in a typical office setting, use standard office equipment, read printed materials and a computer screen, and communicate in person or over the telephone. May be occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The work also requires the following physical abilities in order to perform the essential job functions: climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
