Small Business Part Time information

What is a small business part-time job?

A small business part-time job refers to a position within a small business where an employee works less than full-time hours, typically fewer than 30-35 hours per week. These roles can include a variety of responsibilities depending on the needs of the business, such as administrative tasks, customer service, sales, or inventory management. Part-time positions in small businesses often offer flexible schedules and can be ideal for students, parents, or individuals seeking supplemental income. Working for a small business may also provide opportunities for learning multiple aspects of business operations and gaining valuable experience.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time employees in small businesses, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time employees in small businesses often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple responsibilities, adapting to shifting priorities, and limited access to training or advancement opportunities. Communication can also be more challenging in smaller teams, as roles may overlap and expectations can change quickly. To address these issues, it's helpful to proactively communicate with supervisors about schedules, clarify job expectations, and seek feedback regularly. Many small businesses value initiative and flexibility, so taking on new tasks and demonstrating a willingness to learn can open up further opportunities for growth within the company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a part-time small business role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a part-time small business role, you need versatility in basic business operations, customer service, and organizational tasks, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and office productivity tools is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and time management skills help you excel in diverse, fast-paced environments. These skills ensure efficient daily operations, positive customer interactions, and the ability to support various business functions as needed.

Job description

SJS Executives, LLC (SJS) of Virginia Beach, an SBA-certified Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), is seeking a part-time, remote technical writer to assist composition and formatting quotes and proposals that maximize the chances of the company winning contract work that is set aside for SDVOSBs.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student looking to build experience in technical writing while working in a flexible, part-time role. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer who enjoys researching new topics, has exceptional command of the English language, and can communicate technical information in a way that is easy to understand.

Pay for this position is $20.00 per hour. The position is expected to average 10 hours per week, with a flexible work schedule designed to accommodate the employee's class commitments.

The federal quotes and proposals that SJS submits to the government are primarily small to moderate size, such that one writer can generate/edit the entire response without a bids and proposals team. (Pricing is generated by a financial analyst, so the writer does not need to perform mathematical calculations, but he or she must be able to ensure each pricing volume meets the proposal format requirements.)

Expected qualified candidates might be asked to provide writing samples of your work for review; each sample should be at least a page and a half of content.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research technical topics and gather information from subject matter experts
  • Write, edit, and proofread technical documents, user guides, procedures, and other documentation
  • Ensure documentation is clear, accurate, and consistent
  • Revise existing documents based on feedback and changing requirements
  • Maintain document organization and version control
  • Collaborate with team members to produce high-quality technical content

Qualifications:

  • US Citizenship is Required.
  • College senior pursuing a degree in English, Communications, Technical Communication, or a related field (preferred but not required)
  • Completion of at least one Technical Writing course
  • Excellent written communication, grammar, and editing skills
  • Strong research and analytical abilities
  • Ability to organize complex information into clear, concise documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments
