What is a skunkworks engineer?

Skunkworks Engineers are specialized professionals who work on highly secretive and innovative projects, often within aerospace, defense, or advanced technology companies. The term 'Skunkworks' comes from Lockheed Martin’s famous Advanced Development Programs, known for fast-paced, cutting-edge innovation outside traditional company processes. These engineers are responsible for rapid prototyping, problem-solving, and developing breakthrough technologies, usually under strict confidentiality. Working as a Skunkworks Engineer often involves multidisciplinary collaboration, creative thinking, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision. The role is ideal for those who thrive in challenging, unconventional environments.

What are some unique challenges skunkworks engineers face when working on highly confidential projects?

Skunkworks Engineers often work on cutting-edge, confidential projects that require strict adherence to security protocols and limited information sharing, even within their own company. This can present challenges such as restricted access to resources, limited collaboration outside of the core team, and the need to rapidly prototype solutions under tight deadlines. Additionally, the fast-paced and secretive environment demands adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive under ambiguity. However, these challenges are balanced by the opportunity to work on innovative technologies and make significant impacts within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a skunkworks engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Skunkworks Engineer, you need advanced expertise in engineering disciplines such as aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in rapid prototyping. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and secure collaboration platforms is crucial, along with security clearances for classified projects. Creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to work discreetly under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for driving innovation and delivering breakthrough solutions in highly confidential, fast-paced environments.

Job description

Innovations Engineer

We are looking for an experienced IT professional to join our exciting culture in a meaningful role leading innovations.

The Innovations Engineer will lead "skunkworks" initiatives to identify, prototype, and implement cutting‑edge solutions that enhance radiology efficiency and workflow. This role is pivotal in exploring emerging technologies, streamlining operations, and driving continuous improvement in the practice. While some initiatives may involve coding, the role is not limited to software development and encompasses a broad spectrum of technical and strategic problem‑solving.

Responsibilities
  • Ideation and Prototyping: Explore emerging technologies and methodologies to propose innovative solutions for radiology challenges.
  • Project Leadership: Lead experimental projects from concept to pilot implementation, ensuring measurable outcomes and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Technical Development: Develop prototypes, tools, or scripts as needed, using coding or other technical means.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with radiologists, IT, clinical staff, and other stakeholders to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement. Organize and participate in regular virtual "Testing Roundtables" for detailed exploration of new peripherals and tools. Coordinate small working groups to test and document devices' effectiveness. Establish collaborative networks with other practices outside of RANT and radiologists to share innovations and resources.
  • Hardware Installation and Configuration: Build and maintain a shared repository of pre‑configured scripts, tools, and setup guides. Install and configure innovative radiology‑specific hardware, such as ergonomic peripherals (e.g. gaming keypads and mice). Pre‑configure devices with radiology‑specific functions (e.g., auto‑start dictaphone software, template auto‑launch) to minimize setup effort. Work directly with new radiologists to ensure seamless hardware setup and provide individualized guidance.
  • Education and Training: Develop an education program to promote adoption of ergonomic and efficiency‑boosting tools, including periodic refreshers and best practices. Track tool adoption rates.
  • Research and Development: Stay informed about industry trends, including AI, machine learning, workflow optimization, and automation technologies.
  • Technology Assessment: Evaluate new tools and platforms for their potential impact on radiology operations.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Create detailed documentation and present findings, recommendations, and results to leadership.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical or innovation‑focused role.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to think creatively and outside the box.
  • Familiarity with healthcare IT systems, particularly in radiology, is a strong advantage.
  • Knowledge of data analysis, workflow automation, or process optimization techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Self‑motivated with a passion for learning and innovation.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in healthcare, radiology, or imaging workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks and their application in healthcare.
  • Proficiency in prototyping tools or platforms (e.g., Figma, Arduino, etc.).
  • Knowledge of ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.
  • Drive innovation at the nation's largest private physician practice by designing and implementing technology solutions that improve healthcare operations and enhance the provider and patient experience.
Why Join Us?
  • Enjoy a competitive benefits package, including a 401(k) match + profit sharing, employee‑paid medical premiums + Health Savings Account funding, free telehealth visits, gym reimbursement, tuition reimbursement, parental leave, volunteer opportunities, and more after the waiting period.
  • Expand your technical expertise by working with emerging technologies, process automation, systems integration, AI‑driven solutions, and cross‑functional teams to solve complex business challenges.
  • Be part of a collaborative, forward‑thinking IT team where your ideas can shape the future of healthcare technology and create meaningful, measurable impact across the organization.
