These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure innovative, safe, and efficient engine designs that meet rigorous industry and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges Jet Engine Design Engineers face during the development process?

Jet Engine Design Engineers often encounter challenges balancing performance, safety, and efficiency within strict regulatory and budgetary constraints. They must address complex technical issues such as thermal management, material selection, and aerodynamics while ensuring designs meet rigorous certification standards. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance—is essential to resolve integration issues and optimize engine performance. Managing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability throughout the iterative design process.

What does a Jet Engine Design Engineer do?

A Jet Engine Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing jet engines used in aircraft. They use advanced engineering principles to create efficient, reliable, and safe engines that meet performance and regulatory standards. Their work involves collaborating with other engineers, running simulations, testing prototypes, and solving complex technical challenges. Jet Engine Design Engineers also stay up to date with technological advancements to incorporate new materials and technologies into their designs.

What is the difference between Jet Engine Design Engineer vs Aircraft Maintenance Engineer?

AspectJet Engine Design EngineerAircraft Maintenance Engineer
Primary RoleDesigns and develops jet engines for aircraftPerforms maintenance, repairs, and inspections on aircraft engines
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in aerospace engineeringAircraft maintenance license, certifications in aviation maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering offices, R&D facilitiesAirports, maintenance hangars, repair stations
Industry UsageAircraft manufacturing, aerospace R&DCommercial and private airline operations, maintenance companies

While both roles involve aircraft engines, Jet Engine Design Engineers focus on creating and improving engine designs, whereas Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are responsible for ensuring engines are safe and functional through repairs and inspections. They work in different environments but are both essential in the aviation industry.

About LiquidPiston

LiquidPiston (LPI) is revolutionizing the internal combustion engine. Our patented High Efficiency Hybrid Cycle (HEHC) and rotary X-engine platform enable compact, ultra-efficient, and power-dense engines for hybrid, aerospace, and power generation applications. We are a mission-driven team of innovators determined to push the boundaries of energy and propulsion.
Position Overview
We are seeking talented and motivated Engine Design Engineers to join our growing team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of developing groundbreaking engine systems and components-from initial concept through prototyping, validation, and production. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, analyze, and optimize high-performance subsystems with a focus on efficiency, weight, durability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define system and component-level requirements aligned with overall engine architecture and performance goals.
  • Design, package, and integrate components into the complete engine assembly, ensuring alignment, mechanical integrity, and functional performance.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and tradeoff analyses; develop conceptual and detailed designs for engine subsystems.
  • Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks; release designs for prototyping and production.
  • Perform or lead design validation activities, including FEA, thermal, and vibration analyses.
  • Drive virtual simulation efforts and support the use of analysis tools for thermodynamic and mechanical performance modeling.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including BOMs, engineering change orders, technical reports, and design specifications.
  • Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM), quality assurance, and serviceability initiatives in collaboration with other functions.
  • Identify and resolve design issues quickly and effectively, driving continuous improvement and root-cause solutions.
  • Plan and execute design validation processes including D/PFMEA, DVPR, and design reviews.
  • Support sourcing efforts and supplier interface activities related to component manufacturing and quality control.
  • Participate in and lead technical presentations to internal stakeholders and external partners.
You Are:
  • A strong mechanical engineer with direct experience in engine or complex mechanical system design.
  • Capable of managing the full lifecycle of components-from concept through post-production support.
  • A hands-on problem solver with strong analytical and creative thinking skills.
  • Passionate about innovation, with a practical, execution-focused mindset.
