Job Description:
The ideal candidate will support U.S. military Modeling & Simulation (M&S) efforts with intermediate-level responsibilities in the design, development, integration, and maintenance of simulation systems used for training, analysis, and decision support in defense environments at our Suffolk, Virginia headquarters. The candidate will work with some independence while collaborating with senior developers and contributing to software architecture decisions. This role requires solid experience in software engineering and growing understanding of military systems, simulation standards, and real-time/constructive simulations.
The candidate performs the following specific assignments:
  • Designs, implements, and maintains simulation software for military training and analysis
  • Contributes to software architecture decisions and technical design reviews
  • Integrates models and simulations with C4ISR systems, data sources, and external interfaces using DIS, HLA, and DDS protocols
  • Translates operational military requirements into scalable and reusable software components
  • Develops and tests simulation scenarios, models, and system behaviors to meet fidelity and performance requirements
  • Collaborates with systems engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and military users to validate simulation capabilities
  • Ensures compliance with software development standards, security guidelines, and configuration management practices
  • Contributes to technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and user manuals
  • Mentors junior developers and participates in code reviews
  • Supports system integration testing and troubleshooting
  • Participates in requirements analysis and system design activities

Experience Required:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • OR Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of relevant software development experience
  • At least 2 years of software development experience, with exposure to M&S domain preferred
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages: C++, C#, Java, or Python
  • Experience with simulation frameworks such as HLA, DIS, or similar M&S tools
  • Understanding of software engineering best practices including Agile/Scrum methodologies

Experience Desired:
  • Experience with DoD M&S standards and tools (STOW, RTI, SISO standards)
  • Knowledge of CI/CD practices and version control systems
  • Understanding of military doctrine, tactics, and operational scenarios
  • Experience with GIS, terrain databases, or synthetic environment generation
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with distributed systems and real-time processing
