What is a sign?

In the context of jobs, 'signs' typically refers to professionals who design, manufacture, install, or maintain signage. These signs can include anything from storefront signs and billboards to traffic and informational signs. Workers in this field may be involved in graphic design, fabrication, electrical work, and installation. Their goal is to create effective visual communication that conveys information, branding, or instructions to the public.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sign maker?

To thrive as a Sign Maker, you need strong design skills, attention to detail, and a background in graphic arts or a related field, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with design software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW, as well as experience with sign production equipment such as vinyl cutters and large format printers, is typically required. Good communication, creativity, and time management are crucial soft skills for understanding client needs and managing multiple projects. These abilities ensure the creation of high-quality, visually appealing signs that effectively meet customer specifications and deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by sign makers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Sign makers often encounter tight deadlines, especially when working on custom or large-scale projects for businesses. Managing multiple client requests, adapting to last-minute design changes, and ensuring high-quality production under time constraints are typical challenges. Effective communication with clients and team members, strong organizational skills, and proficiency with sign-making software and equipment are key to overcoming these obstacles. Additionally, staying up to date with new materials and fabrication techniques can help sign makers deliver better results and maintain a competitive edge.

Job description

Are you an experienced sign installer who also enjoys the hands-on work of building and producing signs? Or are you a skilled sign production professional who is comfortable taking that work into the field?

We are looking for a Sign Installer & Production Fabricator to join our growing team. This is a hands-on position that combines shop production, sign fabrication, vinyl and graphics work, and field installation. The ideal candidate is someone who can confidently work in the shop but is equally comfortable loading up the truck and heading to a jobsite to get an installation completed correctly.

We create everything from vehicle wraps and wall murals to dimensional letters, channel letters, routed signs, and complete custom sign projects. No two projects are exactly alike, and you'll have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, equipment, and installation environments.

What You'll DoField Installation
  • Install interior and exterior signs, graphics, vinyl, dimensional lettering, and other signage at customer locations

  • Install vehicle graphics and wraps as needed

  • Safely load, transport, and unload signs, tools, and installation materials

  • Measure and prepare installation locations to ensure proper placement and alignment

  • Use hand and power tools to complete installations

  • Work from drawings, specifications, measurements, and project instructions

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and problem-solving at the jobsite

  • Safely operate ladders, lifts, and other equipment required for installations

  • Represent the company professionally when working at customer locations

  • Work independently in the field while maintaining communication with the production team

Shop Production & Fabrication
  • Operate printers, plotters, laminators, routers, and other sign-production equipment

  • Produce vinyl graphics, lettering, signs, and other printed materials

  • Weed, mask, laminate, and apply vinyl graphics

  • Fabricate and assemble signs using a variety of materials and construction methods

  • Build dimensional letters, panels, displays, and other custom signage

  • Prepare completed signs and graphics for installation

  • Inspect finished products for quality, accuracy, and appearance

  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe production area

  • Assist with inventory, materials, and general shop organization

Team & Project Support
  • Review project details and identify potential issues before production or installation

  • Communicate with team members regarding project requirements, timelines, and materials

  • Help keep projects moving efficiently from production through installation

  • Take pride in producing high-quality work and completing projects correctly the first time

  • Perform other related duties as needed

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is comfortable doing both shop and field work. You don't have to know everything about every type of sign, but you should bring real hands-on experience and the ability to learn.

Required / Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in sign installation, sign production, fabrication, graphics, construction, or a related skilled trade

  • Experience installing signs, graphics, vinyl, wraps, or similar products

  • Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools

  • Ability to read measurements and follow installation instructions, drawings, or specifications

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work independently at customer locations

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a production team

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship

  • Dependable, punctual, and willing to work with your hands

  • Ability to safely lift and move signs, materials, and equipment

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

  • Ability to work from ladders and lifts and in various indoor and outdoor environments

Experience with any of the following is a plus:

  • Vehicle wraps

  • Large-format printing

  • Vinyl application

  • Channel letters

  • Dimensional lettering

  • Electrical sign installation

  • CNC routers

  • Sign fabrication

  • Wall murals

  • LED or illuminated signage

  • Lift equipment

What We Offer
  • $30–$40 per hour, depending on experience

  • Opportunities to develop both production and installation skills

  • Variety in the work — no two projects are exactly alike

  • Modern production equipment

  • A hands-on team environment

  • Opportunities for continued growth as your skills develop

Candidates with strong experience in both sign fabrication/production AND field installation will be considered at the top of the pay range.

The Ideal Candidate

The person who succeeds in this role isn't someone who only wants to work in the shop or someone who only wants to install.

We're looking for a well-rounded sign professional who can move comfortably between the two.

You might spend the morning running a printer, laminating graphics, or fabricating a sign — and spend the afternoon loading the truck and heading to a customer's location to install it.

If you enjoy building things, solving problems, working with your hands, and seeing a project go from raw materials to finished installation, we'd like to hear from you.

This position is being advertised and screened by The HR Dept LLC on behalf of our client.
