Job description

Position Information The City of Pittsburg in California seeks a RECREATION COORDINATOR for the Recreation Department. The Recreation Coordinator is the lead class responsible for specific Recreation Department activities involving sports, cultural, recreational, specialized, and youth services. The Recreation Coordinator coordinates and implements programs and activities for recreational programs; provides supervision to site staff; assist the Recreation Supervisor with the operation of the facilities including condition of the facility, budget, supplies, and financial transactions; may create material such as forms and newsletters; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Additional assignments include developing, organizing, facilitating, collaborating, marketing and evaluating programs as well developing/maintaining partnership with local non-profits and agencies. This position requires incumbents to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. The ideal candidate for Recreation Coordinator possesses the following: Has a passion and strong desire to work and provide successful events and activities.

Possesses the ability to multitask; coordinate, organize and implement a variety of activities and programs; identify methods to maximize service effectiveness and efficiency. Knowledge of supervisory principles and the ability to hire, train, direct, mentor, and resolve employee issues. Knowledge of parks and recreation programming.

Leadership experience and people management skills. Excellent communicator with strong verbal and written skills. Able to prioritize and efficiently manage assignments for self and others.

Adapts to varied and changing priorities in the work environment. Able to work in a collaborative environment and interact and establish positive relationships with staff, community organizations, state/local agencies, and the members of the public. Has a high interest in community engagement.

About the Recreation Department The Recreation Department presents programs and services including aquatics and youth sports, the Senior Center, and Small World Park to over 50,000 participants. These programs and services enhance the quality of life for all age groups of residents in the City of Pittsburg. The administration of all programs help support City development, encourage community image, and promote social interaction and a positive sense of community.

In addition, the Recreation Department also provides a variety of community events throughout the City. About Pittsburg The City of Pittsburg is a culturally rich and diverse community of over 76,000 residents and expected to grow to 90,000 in the next 20 years. Pittsburg is located in the Bay Area Region of Northern California and is perfectly situated for easy access to San Francisco, Napa Valley, Sacramento, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and Lake Tahoe.

Pittsburg City Hall is also conveniently located a short walk from the Pittsburg Center Station of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), making a commute from cities throughout the Bay Area very easy. Examples of Duties Duties include, but are not limited to: Provides direct supervision for site staff in accordance with applicable laws and policies to include hiring, training, assignment, scheduling, performance evaluation, and problem resolution. Ensures a clean, safe and orderly program environment by monitoring the condition of the facilities and notifying the Recreation Supervisor of required repairs or replacement of equipment and the cleaning of program areas. Monitors site budget of various programs and ensures the timely preparation of required reports.

May be responsible for the maintenance and ordering of supplies. Record and monitor all financial transactions associated with the collection of fees. Confers with the Recreation Supervisor on the status of program goals and objectives, operational matters and problem areas.

May assist in development of informational sheets, forms and newsletter articles. Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public. Works a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications Education: Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED and supplemental coursework in the field of recreation services or equivalent. Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the conduct of recreation or leisure activities. Substitution for Experience: An Associates degree in Recreation or related field may substitute experience.

License: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license and proof of auto liability insurance is required. Qualified applicants must also possess: Knowledge of: Principals and practices of personnel management, budget development, administration and evaluation; and applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations. Ability to: Coordinate, organize and implement childcare, recreation and leisure time activities; maintain a program in compliance with State Licensing Requirements (for youth services); maintain detailed records and complete state mandated reports; work cooperatively with others; operate standard office equipment; effective communication skills both oral and written.
