How much do shuckers jobs pay per hour?

As of May 31, 2026, the average hourly pay for shuckers in the United States is $17.70, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.02 and $18.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shucker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shucker, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and experience handling seafood, often gained through on-the-job training. Familiarity with shucking tools, safety equipment, and food handling regulations is essential. Excellent time management, teamwork, and customer service skills help Shuckers excel in fast-paced environments. Mastering these skills ensures product quality, maintains food safety standards, and enhances customer satisfaction in seafood establishments.

What are some common challenges Shuckers face, and how can they overcome them on the job?

Shuckers often deal with repetitive hand movements and the risk of hand injuries from sharp shells or shucking knives. Maintaining speed while ensuring the quality and cleanliness of the shellfish is another challenge, especially during busy periods. To overcome these, it's important for Shuckers to use proper protective gear, follow safe shucking techniques, and take regular breaks to avoid strain. Teamwork is also essential, as Shuckers frequently coordinate with kitchen staff and servers to ensure timely and hygienic service.

What are shuckers?

Shuckers are workers who specialize in opening (or 'shucking') shellfish, such as oysters, clams, or mussels, typically for seafood restaurants, processing plants, or seafood markets. Their main responsibility is to safely and efficiently remove the edible part of the shellfish from its shell without damaging it. Shuckers often use specialized knives and must follow strict food safety and sanitation procedures. The job requires good hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and sometimes speed, especially in high-volume environments. Shuckers may also be responsible for sorting, cleaning, and preparing shellfish for serving or further processing.
