About the Role:
General Motors is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Software Engineer to join our Digital eCommerce team. This team is responsible for supporting the OnStar Sales team by developing and optimizing microservices associated to Digital Order Management and fulfillment/activation services.
Our main goals are improving the customer experience, driving sales and improve team productivity. As a Software Engineer team our mission is to rapidly and relentlessly ideate, iterate, and launch the innovative solutions to connect GM with current and future customers. Our team comprises industry-leading software, quality, dev ops and data engineers, who utilize a variety of innovative development methodologies and technologies to achieve breakthrough results, drive innovation, delight customers and working on sustaining and keeping our environments available to help business to achieve revenue goals.
What You'll Do
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be the technical anchor for our OnStar eCommerce initiatives. You will lead complex engineering efforts, architecting scalable, resilient, and customer-centric platforms, while serving as our definitive expert on Shopify platform operations.
  • Champion Operational Excellence: Help in platform management by establishing gold-standard monitoring, alerting, and incident response protocols, specifically for our Shopify infrastructure.
  • Shopify & eCommerce Leadership: Lead the deployment, configuration, and scaling of Shopify and custom eCommerce platforms, ensuring they can handle peak seasonal traffic with absolute reliability and low latency.
  • Architect for Scale: Design and implement highly available microservices and APIs that seamlessly integrate Shopify with GM's internal systems, IBM OMS, and external partners.
  • Drive AI & Engineering Excellence: Champion the integration of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, AI-driven observability) to accelerate code delivery, automate repetitive tasks, and elevate team productivity.
  • Technical Mentorship: Provide strategic technical direction to a team of mid-level and senior software engineers, aligning architectural decisions with Digital Commerce business goals.
  • System Resilience: Partner tightly with DevOps and SRE teams to embed advanced observability frameworks (e.g., Datadog) and robust CI/CD pipelines directly into the engineering culture.
  • Innovate the Platform: Architect systems that support personalized recommendations, dynamic pricing, and real-time inventory visibility to continuously optimize the B2C eCommerce flow.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Deep eCommerce Expertise: 7+ years of rigorous software engineering experience, with a heavy concentration on enterprise-grade eCommerce solutions (shop, search, cart, checkout, order management) with full stack experience.
  • Operational Ownership: Extensive background in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, telemetry, and observability tools (Datadog) to ensure zero-downtime deployments and rapid incident resolution.
  • Distributed Systems: Extensive experience designing and building event-driven microservices, high-throughput RESTful APIs, and backend systems (e.g., Java, Python, Node.js).
  • Adaptability & Problem Solving: Proven track record of mastering new languages, frameworks, and architectural paradigms quickly to solve complex business problems.
  • Cloud Native Development: Strong hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization/orchestration.
  • AI Tooling: Experience leveraging modern AI coding assistants and automation tools to enhance personal and team output.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Domain expertise integrating Shopify with complex enterprise backends, as subscription billing platforms (e.g., Zuora).
  • 10+ years of experience with a strong track record spanning both modern backend frameworks (Spring Boot, etc.) and front-end ecosystems (React, Next.js).
  • Advanced expertise in event streaming and message brokers (Kafka, IBM MQ, Azure Topics).
  • Experience architecting and deploying AI/ML models for consumer-facing features (search optimization, dynamic pricing, recommendations).
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and advanced CI/CD automation.
  • Shopify or similar eCommerce platform experience:, hands-on experience deploying, managing, and monitoring these platforms at scale. You should be intimately familiar with APIs, platform limits, and ecosystem best practices.

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
