Job description

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE Responsible for assisting the farm manager in the agricultural and landscape maintenance and livestock management associated with the running of Watson Farm, Jamestown, Rhode Island.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS % of Time Responsibility:

  • 50% Assists Farm Manager in farm related tasks including landscape maintenance, field work and hay production, invasive plant control, stone wall clearing and repair, fence clearing and repair, tree work, machinery maintenance and operation, and light carpentry work.
  • 35% Assists Farm Manager in livestock management including feeding and handling of cows and sheep, rotational grazing, water systems, breeding, calving and lambing, and marketing.
  • 5% Provides all aspects of weekly landscape maintenance for public areas including mowing, weed-whacking, and chainsaw clearing around the farm entry, farm house, barns, and public paths.
  • 5% Provides support for public programs and visitation. This position regularly interacts with the public.
  • 5% Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Key Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent combination of skilled credentials to include three (3) years of related employment experience.

Experience with operation and maintenance of power tools, landscape equipment, and farm equipment including tractors.

Mechanical aptitude

Strong communication skills

Valid driver's license and means of transportation

Strong belief in, and demonstrated commitment to, Historic New England's mission and values

Commitment to the highest standards of professionalism, excellence, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA)

New England residency required

Experience working with and handling livestock, specifically, sheep and cattle

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a salaried, exempt, 40 hours per week position, typically eight-hour days plus a thirty minute unpaid meal break, per state labor regulations. This position is based at Watson Farm located in Jamestown, RI, with occasional New England region travel and flexible availability for occasional evening and weekend work required.


As typically performed, this position regularly involves talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Manual lifting ability of up to 50 pounds required. Must perform functions including; basic keyboarding and electronic and paper database/file management, each of which typically requires manual dexterity in combination with eye hand coordination. The position also requires constantly reading documents for general understanding.
