What is a SharePoint 2013 Developer?

A SharePoint 2013 Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and customizing applications and solutions on the Microsoft SharePoint 2013 platform. Their responsibilities typically include creating workflows, web parts, and integrating SharePoint with other business systems. They work with technologies such as C#, .NET, JavaScript, and SharePoint Designer to enhance collaboration and document management within organizations. They also troubleshoot issues and ensure the platform meets organizational needs.

What is the difference between Sharepoint 2013 Developer vs Sharepoint 2010 Developer?

AspectSharepoint 2013 DeveloperSharepoint 2010 Developer
Required CertificationsSharePoint certifications, Microsoft certificationsSharePoint certifications, Microsoft certifications
Work EnvironmentOn-premises, cloud integration, hybrid environmentsPrimarily on-premises environments
Industry UsageWidely used in enterprise solutions, modern web parts

SharePoint 2013 Developers focus on newer features like apps, hybrid deployment, and modern web parts, whereas SharePoint 2010 Developers primarily work with classic workflows and on-premises solutions. Both roles require similar certifications and work environments, but 2013 developers adapt to more advanced, cloud-compatible features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SharePoint 2013 Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SharePoint 2013 Developer, you need expertise in SharePoint architecture, .NET development, web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with SharePoint Designer, Visual Studio, PowerShell scripting, and Microsoft certifications such as MCSD or MCSA are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to work collaboratively with stakeholders set top candidates apart. These competencies are essential for designing, customizing, and maintaining robust SharePoint solutions that align with business needs.

What are some common challenges faced by SharePoint 2013 Developers when customizing workflows and how can they be addressed?

One of the main challenges SharePoint 2013 Developers encounter is dealing with the limitations of built-in workflow tools, especially when implementing complex business processes. These limitations often require developers to create custom workflow solutions using SharePoint Designer or Visual Studio, which can be time-consuming and demanding in terms of testing and maintenance. Collaborating closely with business analysts and end-users to clearly define workflow requirements, and keeping thorough documentation, can help streamline the customization process and minimize rework. Additionally, staying updated with patches and best practices helps avoid compatibility issues and ensures smoother deployments.
