Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Seasonal position under the direction of the Camp Director, the Specialty Counselor will have the camper’s experience and team leadership as their prime considerations at the Camp Seton outdoor and YMCA indoor site locations. Responsibilities include orientating, instructing and monitoring all participants and team members in the Summer Camp Program setting with an emphasis on safety, inclusivity and development for participants and staff.

- Date: June 22 - July 31, 2026

- Location: Camp Seton

Specialty Counselor will lead activities for all or some of the following specialized program weeks for middle schoolers:

  • Week 1: Sports Camp - Sports program focused on building basketball and soccer skills where athletes build skills, teamwork, and confidence through a variety of age-appropriate sports and active games.
  • Week 2: Wilderness Camp - Nature-themed program that teaches outdoor skills, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience through hands-on challenges in a fun, supportive environment.
  • Week 3: Archery & Climbing Camp - Athletic camp combining archery fundamentals with bouldering and climbing challenges, helping campers develop focus, coordination, and confidence.
  • Week 4: Jr. Innovators Camp - Creative entrepreneurship camp where future leaders design, build, and pitch their own ideas through fun problem-solving challenges, innovation exercises, and team projects.

Camp Director

PAY RANGE:

$20/hour - $25/hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organize and lead specialized group activities each week.  Activities may include sports, archery, climbing, wilderness craft & skills, and STEM.
  • Identify, respond and develop plans to manage camper behavior issues.
  • Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and behavior management.
  • Report concerns regarding campers, parents and/or staff to the Camp Director.
  • Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • Help guide CITs, Camp Interns & Volunteers to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
  • Supervision, guidance and development of individual team members.
  • Act as a positive role model and a positive voice for the YMCA of Greenwich. 
  • Demonstrate professionalism in the performance of all duties as directed by your supervisors.
  • Reliably work assigned shifts.
  • Confident in an outdoor environment and able to adapt to changing environmental/weather conditions.

       QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Over the age of 18 years old.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with children/teens.
  • Coaching certificate or equivalent required for related activities: sports, archery, climbing and/or wilderness curriculum.
  • Prior to or upon hire, completion of YMCA provided First Aid/ CPR/AED certification and Medication Administration certification courses.
  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.
  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
