About the Department of Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine is home to 20 categorical residents per year, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for this program. In September 2021, Dell Med's IM program deployed a resident staffed team to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin (SMCA) Hospital. SMCA is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care and comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Center. SMCA also has a Level IV Trama Center.
About The Clinician Investigator for Addiction Medicine Position
The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional physician to join the Department of Internal Medicine as a clinician-investigator for Addiction Medicine who is committed to providing healthcare services to patients in need of addiction and/or substance use related care.
Development of a strong health services research program is essential for meeting the goals of Dell Medical School. The clinician-investigator position will be primarily focused on additional medicine research and efforts to push the boundaries of medicine to transform patient care. Dell Med will provide mentorship and shared resources to ensure the greatest opportunity for advancement as a clinician-investigator. The position will also include approximately 30-40% clinical and educational effort, with the specific responsibilities to be negotiated.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Participate in health services research, including the development of grant proposals, conduction of health services research, and dissemination of new learning and innovations.
  • Provide high-quality clinical care and clinical teaching.
  • Mentor or collaborate with other researchers or researchers in training, including graduate students.
  • Under dissemination of research findings: publish work in high-impact journals. present work at national and international meetings, work with care providers and health care delivery networks to implement research in practice.

Qualifications
Required:
  • The selected candidate must have an M.D./D.O., be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and must have completed specialty training in Addiction Medicine and/or be board certified or board eligible in Addiction specialty
  • Unrestricted license (or ability to obtain within 90 days of appointment) to practice medicine in the State of Texas.
  • Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor or above.
  • Commitment to an academic career, teaching and research

Preferred:
  • Successful candidates will have independent NIH-funding or other independent research funding
  • Fellowship training and/or experience in health services/additional medicine research.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity, including prior national research presentations and publications.
  • HIV and/or LGBTQ+ research
