SESAC (Society of European Stage Authors and Composers) employees, such as licensing representatives or royalty administrators, require a strong understanding of music rights management, licensing processes, and contract negotiation, typically backed by a background in music business or related fields. Familiarity with royalty tracking software, copyright databases, and industry-standard tools is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and relationship-building skills help professionals excel in this role. These competencies are essential for navigating complex licensing agreements, ensuring accurate royalty distribution, and maintaining positive partnerships with artists and clients.
A SESAC job typically involves working for SESAC, a for-profit performing rights organization that collects and distributes royalties for songwriters, composers, and music publishers. Employees may work in licensing, administration, legal, or artist relations to ensure music creators receive fair compensation. SESAC differs from ASCAP and BMI by operating on an invitation-only basis for its affiliates.
Professionals in SESAC licensing or royalty administration roles are responsible for negotiating and managing music licensing agreements, tracking and processing royalty payments, and ensuring compliance with legal and contractual requirements. They often analyze usage reports, interact with clients such as broadcasters and streaming services, and support artists in maximizing their earnings. Collaboration with other departments, such as legal and client relations, is common to resolve issues and optimize workflows. The role requires juggling multiple priorities and maintaining meticulous records to ensure that rights holders receive accurate and timely compensation.
