Effective collaboration ensures smooth workflow, minimizes misunderstandings, and enhances customer satisfaction.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a service writer?

To thrive as a Service Writer, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong organizational skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), repair order software, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools is often required. Exceptional communication, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively interact with customers and technicians. These skills ensure accurate service documentation, efficient workflow, and a high level of customer satisfaction in a fast-paced environment.

What is a service writer?

As a service writer, you are an automotive professional who works as a liaison between customers and a variety of automotive service providers, including mechanics, dealerships, and other related entities. You work as an advisor to explain to customers the repairs that may be needed on their vehicle and the suggestions being made by the mechanic. It is your job to ensure the customer gets only the services they need while paying a price appropriate to the costs of labor and parts. You must be an excellent communicator and knowledgeable about cars and the automotive industry.

Can you be a service writer with no experience?

Service writers can sometimes start with little or no experience if they have strong communication skills and a basic understanding of automotive or technical terminology. Employers may provide on-the-job training, and certifications like ASE can improve job prospects, but prior experience is often preferred for more advanced roles.

Join us as a founding team member and help define what exceptional van service looks like in the Pacific Northwest.
ABOUT MERCEDES-BENZ VAN CENTER OF VANCOUVER
The Mercedes-Benz Van Center of Vancouver is a brand-new, dedicated Sprinter Van Center opening in September 2026 in the heart of the Vancouver/Portland metro area. We are not just another dealership - we are a purpose-built facility focused exclusively on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, serving businesses, commercial fleets, adventure enthusiasts, and hospitality partners across the Pacific Northwest.
This is a rare ground-floor opportunity. You won't be inheriting someone else's culture or fitting into an existing mold - you'll be helping to build it. We believe that exceptional hospitality isn't just for guests; it starts with how we treat each other and every person who walks through our doors.
At our Van Center, hospitality is a core value - not a department. Every team member plays a role in delivering an experience that is warm, professional, and genuinely different from anything in our market.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Greet clients with warmth and professionalism, setting the tone for a hospitality-first experience from the first interaction
• Write up repair orders accurately, capturing customer concerns clearly for the service team
• Provide clients with accurate estimates, transparent timelines, and proactive updates throughout the repair process
• Serve as the primary point of contact between clients and technicians, ensuring clear communication flows in both directions
• Recommend appropriate maintenance services based on manufacturer guidelines and vehicle condition
• Follow up with clients post-visit to ensure complete satisfaction
• Manage scheduling to optimize shop capacity and minimize client wait times
• Support a seamless, low-friction customer experience aligned with Mercedes-Benz brand standards
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
• 2+ years of service advisor or service writer experience in an automotive dealership or service environment
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills - you make people feel at ease
• Genuine hospitality orientation: you go beyond transactional and make every interaction memorable
• Familiarity with Dealer Management Systems (CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, or similar)
• Ability to explain technical information to non-technical clients with clarity and patience
• Comfort managing a high-volume, fast-paced environment without sacrificing quality
• Mercedes-Benz or luxury brand experience a plus
• Valid driver's license with clean record
COMPENSATION & STRUCTURE
• Base salary plus performance-based commission tied to service revenue and CSI scores
• Bonus opportunities for outstanding customer satisfaction results
WHY JOIN OUR FOUNDING TEAM?
• Ground-floor opportunity to shape the culture, processes, and standards of a brand-new operation
• Represent one of the world's most iconic luxury brands
• Competitive compensation package with performance-based incentives
• Manufacturer-supported training and Mercedes-Benz certification opportunities
• Collaborative, hospitality-first culture where your contributions are seen and valued
• Serve a thriving and growing commercial market in one of the Pacific Northwest's fastest-growing corridors
• Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and paid time off
• Career growth potential as the business grows and scales
