What is a service manager?

Service manager is a broad title given to positions throughout a wide variety of industries. As it is an umbrella term, responsibilities vary significantly from job to job. However, in all service manager positions, your duties revolve around ensuring that the services your company offers are running smoothly. This means coordinating with a team of service workers to ensure that their work meets the standards set by the company and the industry. In industries like healthcare, this may require more than basic customer service, as your team must also meet government regulations. Management positions may require overtime, especially in shift work industries, as you are responsible for the performance of the entire department, not just a particular shift. Necessary skills and qualifications vary by job. However, all service managers must be organized, able to delegate when needed, and have excellent communication skills.

What does a service manager do?

A Service Manager oversees the delivery of customer service within an organization, ensuring that client needs are met efficiently and effectively. They manage service teams, coordinate maintenance or repair schedules, handle customer inquiries or complaints, and work to improve overall service quality. Service Managers also analyze service processes, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with company policies and standards. Their goal is to enhance customer satisfaction and support the business’s operational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in operations management, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems, service management software, and process improvement methodologies like Six Sigma is often required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you effectively lead teams and resolve client issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service delivery, and achieving operational goals.

They often coordinate with sales teams to understand customer expectations, communicate with technical staff to resolve complex service issues, and provide feedback to product teams for service improvements. Regular interdepartmental meetings and transparent communication are key to identifying and addressing customer pain points, ultimately enhancing overall satisfaction.

Job description

Service Manager

ABOUT RUNDE CHEVROLET

Runde Chevrolet is part of the Runde Auto Group, a family-owned and operated dealer group with four locations serving the Tri-State area. We've built a reputation for integrity, community involvement, and delivering great ownership experience — and we hold our team to that same standard. Our East Dubuque location is a full-service Chevrolet dealership with a tenured service team, loyal customer base, and a strong foundation to build on.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Service Manager to lead our fixed operations department at Runde Chevrolet. This is a dual-focus role — you'll be expected to drive revenue and CSI improvement while developing and stabilizing the team around you. The right candidate leads from the front, earns the respect of their technicians and advisors, and brings both operational discipline and a customer-first mentality to everything they do.

This role reports directly to dealer group leadership and has full authority over the service department's operations and performance metrics.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and hold accountable a team of service advisors, technicians, and support staff
  • Build a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and training sessions
  • Work with HR to hire and onboard service department personnel as needed
  • Mentor advisors on effective customer write-up, upsell communication, and RO management

Revenue & Performance

  • Own department financial performance including labor gross, parts gross, and overall fixed absorption
  • Set and monitor KPIs including ELR, hours per RO, advisor productivity, and technician efficiency
  • Develop and execute strategies to increase customer pay, warranty, and internal revenue lines
  • Work closely with the parts department to optimize inventory and turn
  • Identify and capitalize on service marketing and retention opportunities

Customer Experience

  • Ensure every customer interaction reflects Runde's standard of integrity and care
  • Resolve escalated customer concerns promptly and professionally
  • Monitor and improve CSI/NPS scores through process discipline and team training
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional service environment

Operations & Compliance

  • Manage shop loading, scheduling, and technician dispatch for maximum throughput
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer warranty procedures and internal controls
  • Maintain accurate RO documentation and proper repair order closing practices
  • Oversee loaner fleet management and shop equipment maintenance
  • Collaborate with dealer group leadership on facility, staffing, and capital needs

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 3+ years of experience as a Service Manager at a franchised dealership
  • Proven track record of growing service revenue while maintaining strong CSI scores
  • Experience leading and developing a team of advisors and technicians
  • GM/Chevrolet brand experience strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of warranty administration, shop scheduling, and parts-service integration
  • Ability to read and act on department financial statements and performance reports
  • Excellent communication skills — with customers, with your team, and with leadership
  • A reputation for honesty, follow-through, and doing things the right way

WHAT RUNDE OFFERS

  • Competitive pay plan with performance-based incentives
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • A stable, family-owned environment where your decisions matter
  • The backing of a multi-rooftop dealer group with real resources and long-term vision

HOW TO APPLY
