Union Gospel Mission Position Description

      

POSITION TITLE:  Food Service Assistant

REPORTS TO: Food Service Director and/or the Food Service Coordinator

SUPERVISES: N/A

LOCATION: 18555 NW Rock Creek Blvd Portland OR 97229 or 3 NW 3rd Ave Portland OR 97209

STATUS:  Part-time, 30 hours per week

WAGE: $18 per hour

 

OVERALL POSITION DESCRIPTION:         

The Food Service Assistant supports the Food Service Director (FSD) or Food Service Coordinator (FSC) with daily kitchen operations at Angela’s House or the Old Town location. Responsibilities include meal preparation and service, stocking and organizing supplies, training residents, and working with volunteers. The Food Service Assistant also helps with special meals and events.

 

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Prep and assist lead cook.
  • Teach and encourage teamwork.
  • Establish & oversee kitchen cleanliness according to Oregon Health Dept regulations.
  • Assist FSD/ FSC with all food related events.
  • Work with volunteers when and where applicable.
  • Work closely with the other departments to ensure all food needs and services operate with organization and food safety.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment, report any issues to FSD or FSC.
  • Assist FSC with grocery re-stocking and/or donations when they arrive.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to support daily kitchen operations in accordance with site guidelines and established procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper kitchen procedures, including food preparation, sanitation, and safe equipment use.
  • Ability to train and mentor residents in kitchen operations, food safety, and basic cooking skills.
  • Working knowledge of proper knife handling, cooking techniques, and food safety standards.
  • Understanding of and ability to follow Oregon Health Department regulations and food service compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain positive working relationships with staff, residents, and volunteers.
  • Ability to assist with food-related events, including menu preparation, setup, service, and cleanup.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning procedures, chemical handling, and organization of food storage areas.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • A criminal history and background check are required and must be successfully completed.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to walk up and down steps.
  • Obtain a food handlers card within 30 days of being hired.
  • Oregon driver’s license preferred, but not necessary.
