Job description

Computer World Services Corp (CWS) is seeking a detail-oriented and results-driven System Administrator - Windows who is responsible for the daily configuration, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of enterprise Windows server environments supporting NIEHS mission-critical systems. This role ensures stable, secure, and efficient system performance across physical and virtual infrastructure.

The Windows System Administrator supports engineering, monitoring, backup, and VMware-based virtualization environments while assisting users in accessing and utilizing enterprise business systems.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Windows System Administration

  • Perform daily configuration and operation of Windows Server systems in a client/server enterprise environment
  • Install, configure, patch, and maintain Windows Server operating systems and associated services
  • Support Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and enterprise identity services
  • Ensure system stability, availability, and compliance with organizational standards

System Engineering & Optimization

  • Participate in system engineering activities including deployment, configuration, and integration of Windows-based infrastructure
  • Assist in optimizing system performance and resource utilization across server environments
  • Support system capacity analysis and planning for growth, scalability, and workload distribution
  • Assist in implementation of system upgrades, patches, and infrastructure enhancements

Monitoring & Operational Support

  • Monitor system health, performance, availability, and utilization across Windows environments
  • Respond to alerts and incidents to ensure timely resolution of system issues
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring system problems and implement corrective actions
  • Support continuous system improvement through proactive monitoring and tuning

VMware Virtualization Support

  • Support Windows Server workloads hosted in VMware vCenter environments
  • Assist in provisioning, managing, and maintaining virtual machines
  • Monitor virtual resource utilization (CPU, memory, storage) and performance metrics
  • Support virtualization troubleshooting and coordination with infrastructure teams

Backup & Recovery Support

  • Support enterprise backup and recovery operations for Windows-based systems
  • Ensure successful execution of scheduled backups in accordance with policies and SLAs
  • Assist in system restoration and recovery testing, including file-level and system-level recovery
  • Support validation of backup integrity and adherence to Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)

User Support & System Access

  • Provide assistance to users in accessing and utilizing Windows-based business systems
  • Troubleshoot login, access, and application-related issues
  • Support identity and access management processes in coordination with enterprise teams
  • Ensure reliable delivery of services to end users across the enterprise environment

Infrastructure Maintenance & Coordination

  • Participate in system maintenance activities including patching, upgrades, and configuration changes
  • Coordinate with VMware, storage, backup, and network teams for integrated infrastructure support
  • Assist in documentation of system configurations, procedures, and changes
  • Support implementation of operational standards and best practices

Required Technical Skills

  • Windows Server administration (2016/2019/2022 or equivalent)
  • Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP management
  • VMware vSphere / vCenter environments
  • Enterprise backup and recovery systems (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, or equivalent)
  • System monitoring and performance analysis tools
  • Basic system capacity planning and resource optimization
  • Troubleshooting enterprise Windows infrastructure issues

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting Federal or NIH environments
  • Familiarity with Red Hat/Linux interoperability in enterprise environments
  • Experience with storage systems (SAN, NAS, DASD)
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting and automation
  • ITIL Foundation certification or IT service management experience
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud environments (e.g., Azure integration)

  • Azure Administrator Associate
  • VMCE or equivalent
  • Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications
  • ITIL certification preferred
