How much do sequencing jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for sequencing in the United States is $42.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.92 and $55.29 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is sequencing?

Sequencing in a job context typically refers to the process of determining the order in which tasks, operations, or steps are performed, especially in fields like laboratory science, manufacturing, or project management. In genomics, sequencing specifically involves determining the precise order of nucleotides in DNA or RNA. Professionals working in sequencing roles may operate specialized equipment, analyze data, and ensure quality control. Sequencing is crucial for research, diagnostics, and production efficiency, depending on the industry. Mastery of sequencing techniques and attention to detail are important skills for these positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sequencing technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sequencing Technician, you need a solid background in molecular biology, laboratory techniques, and a relevant degree such as biology or biotechnology. Familiarity with DNA sequencing platforms (like Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and certifications in laboratory safety are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork set outstanding technicians apart. These competencies ensure accurate sequencing results, maintain laboratory efficiency, and support critical research or diagnostic projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in sequencing labs, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in sequencing labs often encounter challenges such as maintaining sample integrity, managing large datasets, and troubleshooting instrument malfunctions. To address these, it's important to follow strict protocols for sample handling, stay organized with data management tools, and proactively perform routine equipment maintenance. Collaboration with bioinformaticians and other lab members is also key, as it helps in troubleshooting and optimizing workflows. Ongoing training and staying updated with advances in sequencing technology can further help overcome these challenges.

What is the difference between Sequencing vs DNA Analysis?

AspectSequencingDNA Analysis
Required CredentialsLaboratory certifications, molecular biology trainingLaboratory certifications, molecular biology training
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, research facilitiesLaboratories, research facilities
Industry UsageGenomics, medical research, biotechGenomics, forensic science, medical diagnostics
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Sequencing involves determining the exact order of nucleotides in DNA, while DNA analysis encompasses various techniques to interpret and compare DNA sequences. Both roles require similar credentials and are used in comparable environments within genomics and biotech industries. Sequencing is a specific process within the broader scope of DNA analysis, making them closely related but distinct in focus.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level DNA Sequencing Technician to join our production laboratory team. This role supports both Sanger sequencing and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing workflows in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. The technician will be responsible for processing DNA samples, preparing sequencing reactions and libraries, operating laboratory instrumentation, maintaining accurate records, and supporting quality and turnaround time goals.

This position is ideal for someone with a strong scientific foundation who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, organization, and working as part of a team to deliver high-quality sequencing services.

Work Schedule

This position follows a Tuesday through Saturday schedule from 2:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Candidates must be able to reliably work this early-morning shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize, sort, prioritize, and process incoming DNA samples according to daily production needs.
  • Perform DNA extraction, purification, and preparation for sequencing workflows.
  • Pipette DNA sequencing reactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare sequencing libraries using Oxford Nanopore protocols while ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Perform DNA purification and related sample preparation steps for Sanger and ONT workflows.
  • Load, operate, schedule, and monitor sequencing instruments, including ABI 3730xl sequencers and Oxford Nanopore sequencers.
  • Operate routine laboratory equipment such as thermocyclers, centrifuges, automated liquid handlers, and related instrumentation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting sequencing runs, workflow issues, and instrument-related concerns to support quality and throughput targets.
  • Maintain accurate production records, batch documentation, logs, and other required quality records in compliance with laboratory standards.
  • Follow work instructions, checklists, batch records, and other controlled documents relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Support quality control activities, including review of sequencing performance and basic data quality checks.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, team leads, and cross-functional partners to meet turnaround time and production goals.
  • Perform other laboratory support duties as assigned by the Lab Team Lead or Supervisor.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Chemistry, or another related scientific field; or equivalent directly related experience.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, maintain accurate records, and comply with established quality systems and company policies.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, nucleic acid quantification, DNA extraction, and purification.
