Job description

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.
Job Summary
  • Conducts comprehensive analysis of genetic variants using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data in a clinical laboratory environment.
  • Interprets the clinical significance of genetic variants in the context of disease, phenotype, and population genetics in accordance with established American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines.
  • Manages variant databases and monitors day-to-day operations of the literature searching and triage pipelines and various error-checking processes.
  • Drafts clinical lab reports according to internal and professional standards.
  • Ensures proper performance of activities related to basic maintenance and operation of the laboratory including creation of laboratory protocols, and participation in quality control/quality assurance activities.
  • Drives innovation by developing new methods and improving existing procedures, quality control, and quality assurance monitoring.
  • Leads research and development projects as they arise.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
  • Master's degree in genetics or a related science field
Preferred
  • Ph.D. in genetics or a related science field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 5 years of relevant experience (Ph.D.); OR
  • 7 years of relevant experience (Master of Science)
Preferred
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
  • Familiarity with clinical genetic report writing
