Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor, under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, provides safe, motivational and knowledgeable instruction to members & program participants.  The instructor is responsible for the safety and proper instruction of class participants. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Never take your eyes off your class. Never leave your children unattended. Safety is your highest priority.
  • Provide safe, competent aquatic instruction using nationally recognized guidelines established by the YMCA of the USA. 
  • Be alert/attentive so as to prevent accidents.  Respond quickly, intelligently, and decisively and in accordance with YMCA established emergency and accident management procedures.
  • Teach with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
  • Must have considerable ability as a swimmer.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of class participants to ensure a safe and positive environment.
  • Enforce all pool rules in a consistent, courteous and fair manner.  Educate family users of the purpose and need for the rules as a professional.
  • Instructors must set up for their classes and return equipment afterwards.
  • Maintain and attendance and skill accomplishment records for class participants.
  • Attend all in-service training programs and staff meetings as scheduled by the director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer certified
  • AED certified
  • First Aid Certified
  • Lifeguard Certification (nationally recognized)
  • Swim Instructor  WSI (American Red Cross) or YSL (YMCA) Certification a plus
  • Minimum age 15 years or older
  • Bilingual in Spanish helpful
  • Be knowledgeable about aquatics and have the know how to teach others to swim.
  • Be knowledgeable about various YMCA programs and events and make appropriate suggestions.
  • Staff must find their own substitute and document coverage with the Aquatics Director. 
  • Be available to parents, participants and staff for questions or comments or know who to refer them to.
  • Report all incidents, accidents or any safety concerns to your supervisor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must have effective problem solving skills.
  • Must demonstrate communication skills.
  • Must be able to complete certification requirements online and in person.
  • Be available to substitute for other staff and follow established substitution procedures.

  • Actively promote membership within department.  Increase visibility and credibility of YMCA programs.
  • Be available to talk with parent/guardian before and/or after classes.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area maximizing efficiency and safety.
  • Reports all accidents / unusual incidents immediately to your supervisor with all necessary documentation.
  • Perform all other responsibilities as required by supervisor.
  • Fill out proper documentation: mid-session reports, end of session reports and any other qualitative or quantitative documents as required by supervisor and deliver them by appropriate dates.
  • Attend in-service and other required meetings
  • Teach private lessons when available.
  • Help with department events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Management.
  • Ensure member satisfaction through program delivery.
  • Initiate a high quality of service and courtesy to all members, participants, volunteers and potential members, and appropriate creativeness in class design.
  • Be knowledgeable about various YMCA programs and events and make appropriate suggestions.
  • Be available to members, program participants and staff for questions, concerns and/or comments.
