Job description

Senior Resident Engineer-Tunnel Engineering/TBM

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Arcadis is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Resident Engineer-Tunnel Engineering/TBM to support one of the most iconic and consequential infrastructure initiatives in the United States — the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP).

We are working in partnership with Parsons and Mace as part of the MPA Delivery Partner team, selected by the Gateway Development Commission to deliver this transformative project. The HTP is a critical component of the broader Gateway Program — one of the most ambitious and impactful transportation initiatives in the nation — and is designed to strengthen mobility, enhance resiliency, and ensure the long-term reliability of the Northeast Corridor.

The project encompasses the construction of a new, two-track rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River, along with the full rehabilitation of the existing 113-year-old North River Tunnel. This vital infrastructure supports more than 200,000 daily passengers via Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT and serves as a backbone for economic activity and connectivity between New York and New Jersey.

This is more than just a job — it's a once-in-a-generation opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant infrastructure program that will reshape rail transportation, drive sustainable economic growth, and improve regional accessibility for millions. As part of this high-performing, multidisciplinary team, you will help deliver excellence on one of the most technically complex and high-profile projects in the world.

If you're seeking to make a meaningful, lasting impact — while advancing your career alongside some of the best minds in the industry — this is your moment.

Role Accountabilities:

  • Participate in the development, execution, supervision, and coordination of all technical aspects, office and field engineering assignments including review of plans, schedules, contracts, procedures, and construction methods.
  • Represent the Construction Management team during Daily Construction Meetings with the Contractor.
  • Support Senior CM Staff with technical input.
  • Manage oversight review of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) design, fabrication, and operation during tunneling.
  • Manage oversight review of detail design, fabrication, delivery, and installation of precast concrete tunnel lining segments.
  • Coordinate with the project team to ensure timely completion of tunneling works according to project specifications.
  • Monitor tunneling progress, ground conditions, and excavation parameters.
  • Review geotechnical and structural monitoring data.
  • Implement safety protocols and quality control measures to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare progress reports, documentation, and reports on TBM operations.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and provide solutions to challenges encountered during tunneling operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 12 + years proven experience working with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
  • Tunneling experience, specifically in pressurized face TBM mining, precast concrete segmental lining, and cross passage construction.

Key Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of safety standards, regulations, and best practices in tunneling operations.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
