Bala is hiring an experienced building technology systems designer to work onsite in its Arlington Virginia office. The position partners with our existing enterprise technology team to develop our District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia offerings which are positioned for growth.

The Senior Systems Specialist – Technologywill have a telecommunications and security discipline focus across corporate, education, healthcare and multifamily projects and will be responsible for supporting Bala’s project design delivery, business development and thought leadership efforts.

The Senior Systems Specialist is responsible for the planning, design, documentation, and coordination of building technology systems, with a focus on telecommunications infrastructure and physical security systems, including access control, video surveillance, and related low-voltage systems. This role supports projects from programming through construction administration, working closely with architects, MEP engineers, technology stakeholders, and clients to deliver coordinated, code-compliant, and resilient building systems.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Design and document telecommunications systems, including:
    • Structured cabling (copper and fiber)
    • Equipment rooms, MDF/IDF layouts, and pathways
    • Backbone and horizontal distribution
    • Carrier demarcation and service provider coordination
  • Design physical security systems, including:
    • Electronic access control systems
    • Video surveillance / CCTV systems
    • Intercoms, intrusion detection, and related subsystems
  • Coordination with Bala’s Audiovisual team
  • Develop system concepts, basis-of-design narratives, and performance criteria aligned with client IT and security standards.
    • Interface with clients, attend project meetings and site visits.
    • Develop systems budgets, scope of responsibility documents and other coordination materials.
  • Provide value across the Bala offices as a technical resource.
    • Interact with other practice groups on vertical market strategic issues.
    • Provide QA/QC on Technology related projects.
    • Assist project managers on design and documentation across all of Bala’s vertical markets (mission critical, hospitality, etc.)
  • Business Development and Sales
    • Assist in the cultivation of DMV area relationships
    • Participate in marketing and business development meetings, attend industry events and act as an external subject matter expert.
    • Assist with developing DMV area clientele to increase project sales cycle possibilities
    • Assist with generating leads, writing proposals, and participating in interviews and marketing presentations.
  • Personal Skills / Career Growth
    • Become proficient in the creation of Bala’s technology deliverables including drawing creation in REVIT and AutoCAD.
    • Continue to maintain current certifications.
    • Maintain learning opportunities and obtain additional credentials that support Bala’s vertical market goals.
    • Identify areas to become a subject matter expert and develop alternative service offerings.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Industry certifications (BICSI RCDD, OSP, DCDC or similar)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering, design or management discipline or history of continuing education and certification on technology design for the built environment.
  • History of thought leadership with formal writing, presentations and/or participation in standards bodies
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience technology design or operations
