What is a senior superintendent?

Senior Superintendents are highly experienced construction professionals responsible for overseeing all aspects of large or complex building projects. They manage on-site operations, coordinate subcontractors, ensure work is completed safely and on schedule, and act as the main point of contact between the field and project management teams. Their leadership ensures projects meet quality standards, adhere to budgets, and comply with regulations. Typically, Senior Superintendents have many years of experience and play a key role in mentoring junior staff and maintaining client relationships.

How does a senior superintendent typically coordinate with project managers and subcontractors to ensure timely project delivery?

Senior Superintendents play a pivotal role in project coordination by acting as the on-site leader who regularly communicates with project managers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders. They conduct daily meetings to review progress, address challenges, and ensure that everyone is aligned with the project schedule and safety standards. By proactively identifying potential delays and working collaboratively to resolve issues, Senior Superintendents help maintain workflow efficiency and uphold quality standards. This collaboration ensures that projects are delivered on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior superintendent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Superintendent, you need extensive experience in construction management, strong leadership abilities, and a background in fields like civil engineering or construction science. Familiarity with project management software (such as Procore or Primavera), OSHA safety certifications, and scheduling systems are typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to motivate diverse teams are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and teamwork.

Field Operations Leadership

Samet Corporationย ย  |ย ย  Greensboro, NC ยท Raleigh, NC ยท Charlotte, NC ยท Wilmington, NC ยท Charleston, SC ยท Savannah, GA

This is an evergreen talent-pipeline posting open across all six Samet offices โ€” not a specific, currently open position.

Great careers rarely start with perfect timing. Thatโ€™s why we like to meet strong field operations leaders before a seat opens up. Applying here puts you on our radar across all six Samet officesโ€”so when the right opportunity fits, whether thatโ€™s now or a few months down the road, we already know you and you already know us. No perfect timing required; weโ€™d just love to start the conversation.

Field operations leadership at Samet is where construction expertise meets executive impact. In these roles, you provide strategic oversight across multiple complex projects and the field teams that deliver themโ€”driving safety, quality, schedule, and client satisfaction at a regional scale, and ensuring The Samet Way is lived consistently on every site.

Youโ€™ll lead and develop senior field talent, partner with preconstruction and business development to win and deliver major work, and represent Samet with our most important clients. If youโ€™ve built a career in the field and youโ€™re ready to shape how an entire region builds and who builds it, this is that seat.

Levels & Experience

This posting covers our senior field operations leadership roles. Weโ€™ll align title and scope to your experience:

  • Field Executive โ€” The highest level of field operations leadership on major projects and strategic accounts, providing executive oversight to Senior Superintendents and project teams across multiple large, complex projects. Typically 12โ€“18 years of commercial construction field experience, including 5โ€“7 in senior superintendent or field leadership roles.
  • Director of Field Operations โ€” Owns the strategy, standards, and performance of all field operations within a region, leading Field Executives, Senior Superintendents, and field teams. Typically 12โ€“18 years of field operations experience, including 5โ€“7 in senior field leadership; expect 40โ€“60% travel across the region.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Provide strategic leadership and executive oversight across multiple large-scale, complex projects, ensuring delivery excellence, safety performance, and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement regional field operations strategy, standards, protocols, and best practices, reinforcing The Samet Way (TSW).
  • Lead and develop senior field management โ€” Field Executives, Senior Superintendents, Superintendents, and Assistant Superintendents โ€” through hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Establish, monitor, and report field operations goals and performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective action.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement through advanced construction methods, lean principles, and technology adoption (BIM/VDC, digital field tools).
  • Partner with preconstruction, project management, and business development on winning approaches, constructability reviews, and value engineering for major pursuits.
  • Serve as the senior field operations interface with strategic clients and on high-profile project delivery.
  • Lead complex problem-solving and crisis management โ€” schedule recovery, quality issues, safety incidents, and stakeholder conflicts.
  • Champion regional safety culture and zero-incident performance; ensure compliance with OSHA and corporate standards across all projects.
  • Oversee quality management and assurance across all regional field operations.
  • Optimize resource allocation, schedule coordination, and cross-project knowledge sharing across multiple sites.
  • Build strategic relationships with trade contractors, suppliers, and industry partners, and represent Samet at industry and client events.
  • Drive workforce development and succession planning, building career pathways from Field Engineer through Field Executive.

What You Bring

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field preferred; equivalent extensive experience considered.
  • 12โ€“18 years of progressive commercial construction field operations experience, with 5โ€“7 years in senior field leadership (Senior Superintendent, Field Executive, or similar).
  • Proven track record delivering multiple large, complex projects ($20M+) simultaneously, on time and within budget.
  • Experience across multiple delivery methods (Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, CM at Risk, IPD) and building types.
  • Expertise in advanced construction technologies โ€” BIM, VDC, and digital project and field management tools.
  • Strong knowledge of construction regulations, OSHA safety standards, quality management systems, and environmental compliance.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder-management skills with senior clients, architects, engineers, and officials.
  • An established industry network and experience in succession planning and developing field talent at all levels.
  • Professional certifications preferred (CCM, PMP, OSHA 30, LEED AP, or similar).

Additional Requirements

Physical Demands: This role requires the physical ability to navigate multiple active construction sites โ€” including climbing stairs, walking on uneven surfaces, and working in varying weather conditions โ€” along with office work for strategic planning and coordination. Regular travel between project sites across the region is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment: A combination of active construction sites in various stages of completion across the region and a professional office environment, with exposure to typical construction site hazards. Regular travel between multiple project sites is required (40โ€“60% for the Director of Field Operations). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency in construction-specific software including project management systems, scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project), BIM/VDC platforms, and document management systems; expert-level Microsoft Office 365; comfort with mobile field-reporting and virtual collaboration tools.

Math Ability: Advanced analytical capabilities, including complex project scheduling, resource optimization, cost analysis, and productivity calculations, with the ability to analyze multi-project and regional performance metrics and develop strategic recommendations.

Reasoning Ability: Superior strategic thinking and problem-solving, with the ability to assess complex regional field operations scenarios, anticipate challenges, develop innovative solutions, and make sound judgments under pressure.

Certificates and Licenses: A valid driverโ€™s license is required. OSHA 30 certification required. Additional certifications in construction management, safety, or quality (e.g., CCM, LEED AP) preferred. Must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug screening as required by company policy.
