What does a senior structural engineer do?

A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes. They lead project teams, review calculations and drawings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Additionally, they collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also addressing any structural issues that may arise during construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior structural engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, you need an accredited engineering degree, professional licensure (such as PE or Chartered Engineer), and deep expertise in structural analysis and design. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS, as well as knowledge of relevant building codes, is essential. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial to ensuring safe, efficient designs and effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams and complex projects.

What are some common challenges faced by senior structural engineers when managing large-scale projects?

Senior Structural Engineers often face the challenge of coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring that all aspects of structural design integrate seamlessly with architectural and mechanical systems. Managing tight project timelines and adapting to evolving client requirements while maintaining compliance with safety standards is also common. Additionally, they may need to troubleshoot unexpected site conditions and communicate complex technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. These challenges require strong project management and leadership skills, as well as the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.

What is the difference between Senior Structural Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

Together, we push the boundaries of known science and find new ways to connect and protect our world. Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power systems and has been revolutionizing modern flight for over 100 years. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense. Pratt & Whitney is seeking for a Senior Design Engineer to support our Mechanical Systems, External, Nacelles (MSEN) Design Engineering team. In this role, you will be part of the Component Integrated Product Teams, resolving high-priority engine teardown and rebuild challenges, determining the resolution of engine disassembly and rebuild issues that develop at the depot during engine rebuild.

What You Will Do:
  • Provide onsite engineering support for engine teardown, inspection, and rebuild activities by evaluating hardware conditions, resolving complex design issues, and delivering timely technical guidance to depot operations.
  • Develop and implement design solutions by applying Pratt & Whitney Engineering Standard Work, collaborating with crossโ€‘functional engineering disciplines, and supporting product improvements throughout the engine overhaul process.
  • Serve as the design engineering representative on Component Integrated Product Teams (CIPTs), balancing customer requirements for durability, performance, manufacturability, cost, and weight when developing design solutions.
  • Evaluate the serviceability of MSEN engine hardware by reviewing teardown inspection findings, determining component dispositions, documenting engineering decisions, and presenting technical recommendations to Pratt & Whitney leadership and customers.

  • Expand your structural analysis capabilities by learning engineering methods and analytical techniques used to evaluate component integrity, support design decisions, and enhance product performance and reliability.
Qualifications You Must Have:
  • A Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or a Masterโ€™s degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, or Civil) and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience in engineering design and/or analysis.
Qualifications We Prefer:
  • Experience in the aerospace industry, with a strong preference for turbofan engine design, development, or sustainment.
  • Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, such as Teamcenter, and experience using Siemens NX or comparable 3D CAD software for mechanical design.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis tools, such as Ansys, and an interest in applying analytical methods to support engineering design decisions.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean, CORE, ACE, Six Sigma, or other process improvement frameworks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SAP, and other engineering or enterprise business applications.
  • Demonstrated project coordination skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and work across crossโ€‘functional teams
